Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Observational Study
Association between intraoperative electroencephalographic suppression and postoperative mortality.
Low bispectral index values frequently reflect EEG suppression and have been associated with postoperative mortality. This study investigated whether intraoperative EEG suppression was an independent predictor of 90 day postoperative mortality and explored risk factors for EEG suppression. ⋯ NCT00281489 and NCT00682825.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study
Volatile compared with total intravenous anaesthesia in patients undergoing high-risk cardiac surgery: a randomized multicentre study.
In high risk cardiac surgery, anesthesia with either sevoflurane or TIVA results in comparable postoperative mortality and morbidity.

Association between fibromyalgia and adverse perioperative outcomes.
Fibromyalgia, the classic non-inflammatory pain syndrome, has been associated with chronic inflammatory makers which are linked with increased morbidity and mortality. We tested the primary hypothesis that patients with fibromyalgia undergoing hospital procedures have a high risk of cardiovascular complications. Our secondary goals were to evaluate the association of fibromyalgia with: (i) in-hospital thromboembolic events, (ii) in-hospital mortality, and (iii) in-hospital microvascular complications. ⋯ We found no evidence that the diagnosis of fibromyalgia increased the risk of in-hospital complications. Fibromyalgia seems to be associated with a reduction in in-hospital mortality, but this requires confirmation with a large prospective controlled study.

Preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate and the risk of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events in non-cardiac surgery‡
Chronic kidney disease is an independent predictor of perioperative cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We analysed the preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) as a risk factor for perioperative major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) in non-cardiac surgery. ⋯ Perioperative MACCE increase with declining eGFR, primarily when <45 ml min(-1) 1.73 m(-2). We recommend the use of preoperative eGFR for cardiovascular risk assessment.
