Regulating antimicrobial sales in Saudi Arabia; Achievements and Challenges.
Antimicrobials save millions of lives annually from dying because of bacterial infections, but the rapid emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) becomes a global threat. The Saudi Ministry of Health (MOH) has taken containment measures to limit the misuse of antimicrobials via implementing restrictions on dispensing without prescriptions. Hence, we aim to evaluate the impact of regulating antimicrobial sales and identify challenges that pharmacists are facing to prevent self-medication with antimicrobial agents. ⋯ Restriction measures implemented by the Saudi MOH led to a 40% to 50% reduction in inappropriate sales of antimicrobials. Further studies are needed to investigate the methods for improving documentation and prescribing practices.

Review Meta AnalysisSerum lipids and the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
The role of serum lipids in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unclear, and the results of previous reports remain conflicting. We aimed to conduct this systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the potential relationships of blood lipids and the pathogenesis of PD. ⋯ TG serum levels are significantly lower in PD patients, more studies are needed to further elucidate role of lipid in the PD development.

Rotating night shift work is associated with an increased risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms among workers in China: a cross-sectional study.
Increasing studies suggest a significant association between night shift work and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity and other metabolic disorders. However, the available evidence of the association of rotating night shift work with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is limited. Herein, we hypothesised a link between the GERD risk and rotating night shift work among workers in China. ⋯ Rotating night shift work is independently associated with an increased risk of GERD symptoms. Moreover a five-variable model (rotating night shift work, age, smoking, H pyori infection and obesity) can help identify individuals at high risk for GERD symptoms among workers in China.

Efficacy of the fibrosis index for predicting end-stage renal disease in patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis.
Kidney involvement is a major manifestation of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) and may progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), requiring renal replacement therapy. Unfortunately, there is no reliable kidney-specific index for predicting the progression of renal disease to ESRD. The fibrosis index (FI) reflects the degree of fibrosis in chronic liver disease. This study aimed to investigate whether the FI at the time of diagnosis could predict the development of ESRD in AAV patients. ⋯ FI ≥ 1.72 at the time of diagnosis may be an independent predictive marker for ESRD in AAV patients.

The influence of mental status on reported local urinary tract symptoms in patients with bacteremic urinary tract infections.
In elderly patients with a urinary tract infection, the influence of mental status on the frequency of local urinary tract symptoms is uncertain. We aim to compare the frequency of reported local urinary tract symptoms between mentally intact and cognitively impaired older people with a bacteraemic urinary tract infection. ⋯ The absence of local urinary tract symptoms in elderly patients with a bacteraemic urinary tract infection is less frequent but common in those mentally intact, and should not preclude the need for a urine culture or antibiotic therapy.
