Randomized Controlled TrialThe Relationship between Depression and Metabolic Control Parameters in Type 2 Diabetic Patients: A Cross-sectional and Feasibility Interventional Study.
Substantial evidence supports a bidirectional relationship between diabetes and clinical depression. However, little is known about the effect of treating one condition on the control of the other. Thus, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of depression among Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and to assess the efficacy and feasibility of escitalopram treatment of depression on their metabolic control parameters. ⋯ The relationship between depression and T2DM in the context of metabolic syndrome is plausible. However, our results show that escitalopram treatment may not be associated with significant improvement in metabolic control parameters among these patients. Our study has laid the groundwork for future randomised clinical trials with larger sample size and longer follow-up.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of hearing aids on attention, memory, and auditory evoked potentials: a pragmatic, single-blinded, and randomized pilot clinical trial.
To compare the effects of hearing aids and their technology levels (premium and basic) on attention, memory, brain response, and self-perceived benefit amongst individuals who were naïve to sound amplification. ⋯ In this study, premium and basic hearing aids impacted attention, memory, brain response, and self-perceived benefit similarly amongst individuals who were naïve to sound amplification after 12 weeks of using the hearing devices.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of Perioperative Comprehensive Nursing Based on Risk Prevention for Patients with Intracranial Aneurysm.
To explore the effect of comprehensive nursing based on risk prevention in perioperative nursing of intracranial aneurysm. ⋯ Comprehensive nursing was associated with the shortness of hospitalisation time of patients, improved rescue rate, reduced occurrence of complications and infection, and improved satisfaction of patients. Thus, comprehensive nursing was regarded to exert protective effect with a promising future for clinical practice.

Randomized Controlled TrialLung deposition and systemic bioavailability of dose delivered to smoker compared to non-smoker COPD subjects.
Inhaled drugs are the most commonly used class of medications for COPD subjects. No studies have been performed to assess the influence of smoking on lung deposition of aerosolized medication, especially for the exacerbated COPD subject. The present study aimed to assess the influence of smoking on the lung deposition of the aerosol delivered to exacerbated COPD subjects. ⋯ The study demonstrated that smoking reduced the lung deposition of inhaled salbutamol delivered by nebulizer or pMDI. However, the smoking effect on cytochrome p450 was observed to increase systemic absorption of the ingested portion of the inhaled dose. The lower lung deposition and possible higher systemic absorption should be taken into consideration while prescribing inhaled medication to COPD smokers especially exacerbated patients that need ventilation. Further studies are needed.

Multicenter StudyAnalysis of treatment success with new inclusion criteria for antibiotic therapy for uncomplicated appendicitis: A multicentre cohort study.
Conservative antibiotic treatment for uncomplicated appendicitis is debated because of the unproven criteria for use and relatively high failure rate. We developed inclusion criteria to optimize antibiotic therapy use and compared the success rate to that seen in previous literature. ⋯ The group enrolled with the new inclusion criteria showed an improved treatment success rate compared to previous studies. These criteria will aid in determining optimal conservative treatment use in patients with uncomplicated appendicitis.
