Review Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Meta-analysis of hybrid natural-orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery versus laparoscopic surgery.
Hybrid natural-orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES), combining access through a natural orifice with small-sized abdominal trocars, aims to reduce pain and enhance recovery. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare pain and morbidity in hybrid NOTES and standard laparoscopy. ⋯ Hybrid NOTES reduces postoperative pain and is associated with greater cosmetic satisfaction in selected patients.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Randomized clinical trial of landiolol hydrochloride for the prevention of atrial fibrillation and postoperative complications after oesophagectomy for cancer.
Atrial fibrillation is common after oesophageal surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether landiolol hydrochloride was effective and safe in the prevention of atrial fibrillation after oesophagectomy, and to see whether a reduction in incidence of atrial fibrillation would reduce other postoperative complications. ⋯ Landiolol was effective and safe in preventing atrial fibrillation after oesophagectomy. Registration number: UMIN000010648 (http://www.umin.ac.jp/ctr/).

Observational Study
Prospective trial to evaluate the prognostic value of different nutritional assessment scores in pancreatic surgery (NURIMAS Pancreas).
Preoperative nutritional status has an impact on patients' clinical outcome. For pancreatic surgery, however, it is unclear which nutritional assessment scores adequately assess malnutrition associated with postoperative outcome. ⋯ None of the nutritional assessment scores defined malnutrition relevant to complications after pancreatic surgery and these scores may thus be abandoned.

Mast cells play important roles in the progression of various malignancies, but their prognostic value in gastric cancer is unknown. Tryptase expression, as an indicator of mast cell activity, was therefore evaluated to see whether this could be incorporated usefully into a prognostic nomogram after surgery in patients with gastric cancer. ⋯ Tryptase expression is an independent prognostic factor for overall and recurrence-free survival in patients with gastric cancer after surgical resection.
