Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Two-Week Sacral Nerve Stimulation Therapy in Patients With Ulcerative Colitis.
Sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) showed anti-inflammatory properties in animal models of inflammatory bowel disease. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of SNS in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). ⋯ Patients with mild and moderate UC were responsive to a two-week SNS therapy. After performing further studies to evaluate its efficacy and safety, temporary SNS delivered through acupuncture needles may become a useful screening tool for identifying SNS therapy responders before considering long-term implantation of the implantable pulse generator and SNS leads for performing long-term SNS therapy.

Transcutaneous Electrical Acustimulation Improves Constipation Symptoms and Accelerates Colonic Transit in Patients With Slow Transit Constipation Through Autonomic Mechanism.
Nearly half of patients with slow transit constipation (STC) are not completely satisfied with their traditional remedies. We aimed to evaluate the therapeutic value and possible involved mechanism of transcutaneous electrical acustimulation (TEA) at ST36 in patients with STC. ⋯ Noninvasive TEA relieves constipation and improves quality of life and psychologic states in patients with STC, and the effects are sustained for ≥two weeks. The therapeutic effects of TEA may be attributed to the acceleration of colon transit and decrease of vasoactive intestinal peptide mediated through the vagal mechanism.

Efficacy of High-Voltage Pulsed Radiofrequency of the Dorsal Root Ganglion for Treatment of Chronic Lumbosacral Radicular Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) is an efficacious treatment for patients with lumbosacral radicular pain, but the optimal radiofrequency parameters are inadequately described. We hypothesized that high-voltage radiofrequency therapy around the dorsal root ganglion can be more effective and enduring than the standard voltage PRF therapy. ⋯ The results of our study revealed that both low- and high-voltage PRF are effective. Because of the lower sixth-month NRS values in the high-voltage group and the similar complication rate, it was considered that high-voltage PRF can be a promising application.

Ninety-Hz Spinal Cord Stimulation-Induced Analgesia Is Dependent on Active Charge Balance and Is Nonlinearly Related to Amplitude: A Sham-Controlled Behavioral Study in a Rodent Model of Chronic Neuropathic Pain.
Ninety-Hz active-recharge spinal cord stimulation (SCS) applied at below sensory-threshold intensity, as used with fast-acting subperception therapy spinal cord stimulation, has been shown clinically to produce significant analgesia, but additional characterization is required to better understand the therapy. This preclinical study investigates the behavioral effect of multiple 90-Hz SCS variants in a rodent model of neuropathic pain, focusing on charge balance and the relationship between 90-Hz efficacy and stimulation intensity. ⋯ The degree to which 90-Hz SCS reduced mechanical hypersensitivity during stimulation depended on the nature of charge balance, with 90-Hz active-recharge SCS generating better responses than did 90-Hz pseudopassive recharge SCS. In addition, our findings suggest that the amplitude of 90-Hz active-recharge SCS must be carefully configured for efficacy.
