Diagnostic utility of hematological indices in predicting adverse outcomes and severity of acute pancreatitis based on BISAP and modified Glasgow score.
The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte-ratio (PLR), and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) are simple indicators of inflammatory status previously established as a severity indicator in distinct disease states. This study aimed to determine the impact of these simple hematologic indices with conventional inflammation markers such as C-reactive pro-tein (CRP) and white blood cells in acute pancreatitis (AP) patients and their relationship with AP risk stratification scores including Bedside Index for Severity of Acute Pancreatitis (BISAP) and modified Glaskow Prognostic score (mGPS) scores. ⋯ The present study showed that NLR and PLR is increased in AP. Moreover, peripheral blood NLR and PLR values can predict disease severity and adverse outcomes associated with AP and can be used as an adjunctive marker for estimating disease severity.

Sigmoid volvulus (SV), the wrapping of the sigmoid colon around itself, is a rare intestinal obstruction form world-wide. For this reason, the physiopathology of SV, particularly the precipitating factors, are not clearly identified. The aim of this study is to evaluate the precipitating factors in SV. ⋯ Although there are few studies about the precipitating factors of SV in the literature, increased bowel motility, excessive body motions, and overeating following a prolonged starvation look like the precipitating factors in the development of SV.

Randomized Controlled TrialDoes anterolateral ligament internal bracing improve the outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in patients with generalized joint hypermobility?
Generalized joint hypermobility (GJH) is a risk factor for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and ACL graft failure and is considered an indication for anterolateral ligament (ALL) reconstruction. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare functional outcomes, rupture rates, and residual instability in patients with GJH undergoing isolated ACL reconstruction or combined ACL reconstruction and ALL augmentation with internal bracing (ALL-IB). ⋯ The functional outcomes were similar between the groups. The stability outcomes after combined ACL and ALL-IB were better than those after isolated ACL reconstruction in patients with GJH. However, the technique and its results need to be validated in larger patient series and prospective randomized controlled trials.

Comparison of pre-operative platelet functions by thromboelastogram in patients selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors user and non-user.
The use of antidepressant drugs, in particular selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), has increased in recent years. Using SSRIs can cause changes in serotonin metabolism. Serotonin provides platelet aggregation and plays a role in the regulation of vascular tone and coagulation processes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of SSRI use on coagulation functions with thromboelastogram (TEG) in patients undergoing surgical operation and to compare with non-user cases. ⋯ When the coagulation process was evaluated by TEG method, it was seen that the onset of clotting was prolonged and thrombus formation was slowed down in SSRI users. The results did not reveal that SSRI alone was the cause of bleeding, but it was concluded that slowing the process might be important, especially for surgical operations.

Emergency department management after the 2020 Aegean Sea - Izmir earthquake.
This article aims to provide an up-to-date resource on disaster management by reporting about the destructive fea-tures of the earthquake that occurred on October 30, 2020, and about the hospital and emergency service organization during a pandemic. ⋯ Emergency services should be ready in terms of accurate registration, correct data entry, correct triage assignment, sufficient resources, adequate team, sufficient equipment, and adequate treatment areas for disasters such as earthquakes. Further, ade-quate disaster trainings should be provided, feasible disaster relief plans should be prepared, and regular exercises should be conducted.
