To investigate effectiveness of brace treatment in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis with curve between 40° and 45° and to determine predictive factors associated with bracing outcome. ⋯ Bracing may produce a favorable outcome in certain patients with curve between 40° and 45°. It should be cautiously used in this situation, as there was a higher probability of bracing failure. It is important to differentiate patients at high risk of curve progression at an early stage to avoid overtreatment.

Hemispherectomy is a successful and well-described treatment option for pediatric patients with hemispheric ictal onset, but adult outcomes have been far less studied. We describe the outcomes in adult patients with medically refractory epilepsy and hemispheric disease and the relationship to cerebral peduncle volume. ⋯ These findings suggest that smaller ipsilateral cerebral peduncle size could potentially be associated with unchanged postoperative hemiparesis. We hypothesize that smaller ipsilateral peduncle size could have represented corticospinal tract reorganization in childhood, implying that the removed brain matter was mostly noncontributory to contralateral motor function.

With the advent of extensive endoscopic approaches for pituitary tumors, there has also been an increase in surgery for larger and more complex tumors. Intraoperative manipulation during endoscopic resection of sellar tumors poses potential risk in postoperative visual function in this tumor population. This study proposes a method of accurate intraoperative monitoring of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and its role in predicting visual function outcomes. ⋯ Changes in VEP amplitude during endoscopic sellar tumor resection correlate with postoperative visual function. Intraoperative VEP monitoring can serve an important role in preventing postoperative visual field loss.

After a craniotomy procedure to access the brain, neurosurgeons have several options to fix the bone flap to the skull. The aim of this study was to assess if a polymeric clamplike fixation system (Cranial LOOP) is a safe and reliable system that maintains over time an appropriate alignment of the bone flap. ⋯ Cranial LOOP is a safe and reliable postoperative long-term cranial bone flap fixation system. This device can fix the bone flap after a wide range of craniotomy procedures, performed in multiple locations, and provides good bone flap alignment. Cranial LOOP does not interfere in patient follow-up through medical imaging.

Spine surgeries performed via the posterior approach have a higher infection rate. Several theories have been proposed, including poor hygienic condition of bed sheets and traumatized muscle associated with supine position promoting circulatory impairment. We investigated the influence of supine position on the rate of deep wound infection after spine surgery by the posterior approach. ⋯ Supine position was significantly correlated with higher rates of wound infection among patients who underwent spine surgery by the posterior approach. Avoidance of supine position may represent a modifiable risk factor to diminish postoperative spine infection rates.
