Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major health issue in developing nations such as India along with underreporting of TBI data because of a lack of major studies targeting the population with TBI. Various lacunae from field to tertiary centers are responsible for this significant burden of TBIs. We studied the epidemiologic profile of 1150 patients with TBI including the predictors of the outcome of TBIs in a tertiary health care institution in North India to identify the modifiable factors that could be used to improve the outcome and reduce the TBI burden. ⋯ Knowledge about the causes, pattern, and distribution of patients with TBI from this study is helpful in policy making, research, health management, and rehabilitation at the national level in ours and in other nations.

After a craniotomy procedure to access the brain, neurosurgeons have several options to fix the bone flap to the skull. The aim of this study was to assess if a polymeric clamplike fixation system (Cranial LOOP) is a safe and reliable system that maintains over time an appropriate alignment of the bone flap. ⋯ Cranial LOOP is a safe and reliable postoperative long-term cranial bone flap fixation system. This device can fix the bone flap after a wide range of craniotomy procedures, performed in multiple locations, and provides good bone flap alignment. Cranial LOOP does not interfere in patient follow-up through medical imaging.

Although several prognostic factors for traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been evaluated, a useful predictive scoring model for the outcomes has not been developed for patients with severe TBI who undergo decompressive craniectomy (DC). The aim of the present study was to determine independent predictors and develop a multivariate logistic regression equation to predict the early outcome and discharge status for patients with severe TBI who have undergone DC. ⋯ Our preliminary findings have shown that 5 variables can be used as independent predictors in assessing the early outcome and discharge status for patients with severe TBI after DC.

Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) presents an important new minimally invasive tool in the management of drug-resistant mesial temporal epilepsy (MTE). However, because of its relative novelty, not much is known about long-term seizure freedom rates. The objective of this study was to evaluate the postsurgical seizure outcome following LITT after a minimum follow-up period of 2 years. ⋯ LITT appears to be a safe and effective initial surgical option for treatment-resistant MTE. Among patients who have seizures after treatment, those without MTS appear to have seizures earlier than those with MTS.

Pituitary apoplexy is a rare but potentially life-threatening disorder that occurs in up to 10% of adenomas. Whereas risk factors for the initial hemorrhagic event are well described, there is minor knowledge on clinical symptomatic recurrent pituitary apoplexies. ⋯ Cavernous sinus invasion and subtotal resection are high risk factors for multiple apoplexies in pituitary adenomas. Early treatment is recommended for residual tumor in the cavernous sinus to minimize the risk of recurrent apoplexy with subsequent worse clinical outcome.
