There is limited literature on outcomes after surgical treatment of giant craniopharyngiomas in adult and pediatric patients. ⋯ Gross total resection/near total resection of giant craniopharyngiomas can be achieved at rates comparable to nongiant tumors. However, there remains a greater risk of postoperative neurological morbidity. Radiation therapy mitigates the risk of recurrence on long-term follow-up.

We sought to evaluate the accuracy of using patient-specific drill guides to place bilateral laminar screws in C1 and C2. ⋯ The study demonstrates that patient-specific drill guides allow for accurate C1 and C2 bilateral laminar screw placement, with a low risk of cortical breach.

As the global population ages, the incidence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is increasing. Whereas mild TBI can impair the cognitive function of older adults, the cause and background of mild TBI-induced cognitive impairment remain unclear, and the evaluation of risk factors for cognitive impairment after mild TBI remains open for consideration, especially in the aging population. This study aimed to evaluate the risks associated with cognitive impairment following mild TBI. ⋯ Older patients with hypertension displayed a significantly higher risk for cognitive impairment after even mild TBI. These patients warrant careful management after even mild TBI.

To determine if a penicillin allergy is an independent risk factor for poor outcomes after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and posterior lumbar fusion (PLF). ⋯ The present study found that a reported penicillin allergy is associated with an increase in sepsis, urinary tract infection, emergency room visit, and readmission postoperatively within 90 days after PLF and ACDF. The findings can help physicians provide patients with more comprehensive preoperative counseling in the setting of patient-reported penicillin allergy.
