Global Epidemiology of Craniosynostosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Craniosynostosis leads to craniofacial deformity and may result in raised intracranial pressure, neurocognitive deficits, and psychosocial issues if left untreated. The global epidemiology of craniosynostosis is unknown. We conducted a meta-analysis to estimate global birth prevalence. ⋯ Craniosynostosis is a common condition that affects the neurocognitive and craniofacial skeletal development of children worldwide. Initiatives to scale up capacity for craniosynostosis epidemiologic research and clinical care are warranted, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Laminectomy vs. Laminectomy with Fusion for Intradural Extramedullary Tumors: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
The primary objective of our systematic review and meta-analysis was to systematically compare the reported outcomes between laminectomy and laminectomy with fixation/fusion (LF) for the treatment of intradural extramedullary tumors (IDEMTs). Our secondary objective was to compare the outcomes between different laminectomy exposure techniques. ⋯ No differences between LF, PL, or TL in pain, neurologic deficit, functional independence, cerebrospinal fluid leak, or wound infection were reported. Laminectomy had greater odds of sagittal instability compared with LF. Patients with preoperative sagittal instability requiring extensive removal of the posterior spinal column to achieve adequate resection of large tumors might benefit from LF.

The purpose of the present study was to compare the clinical outcomes and complications between the mini-open Wiltse approach with pedicle screw fixation (MWPSF) and percutaneous pedicle screw fixation (PPSF) in treating neurologically intact thoracolumbar fractures. ⋯ Both MWPSF and PPSF are safe and effective treatments of neurologically intact thoracolumbar fractures. Nevertheless, our results have indicated that MWPSF might be the better choice, because it has a shorter learning curve and decreased facet joint violation, operative time, hospitalization costs, and radiation exposure. In addition, MWPSF was associated with better improvement of the postoperative vertebral body angle and percentage of vertebral body height.

Radiosurgery for benign vertebral body hemangiomas of the spine: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Spinal vertebral hemangiomas (SVHs) are the most common benign tumors of the spine. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of radiosurgery (RS) for SVHs. ⋯ Radiosurgery is safe and effective for SVHs. Pain relief after RS in symptomatic patients was extremely high, while no progressive disease was reported. Damage to surrounding tissues was reported in only 1 series and included osteitis, osteonecrosis, or soft tissue injury after higher radiation doses.
