Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme which has been proven useful as a biomarker for bone turnover and inflammation. We hypothesized that high serum ALP levels are associated with increased complication rates following lumbar spinal fusion. ⋯ Elevated serum ALP in patients undergoing lumbar fusion procedures is associated with increased risk for multiple in-hospital complications as well as higher rates of readmission and reoperation.

Most of the scientific and healthcare resources in Mexico are limited to the large major cities. However, many communities with complex socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds have limited access to neurosurgical care. A cross-sectional study aiming to evaluate the population's perception regarding neurosurgical care was conducted. ⋯ Our findings suggest that sociodemographic factors such as age, education, and income correlate with the population's self-perceived knowledge, trust and beliefs about safety and effectiveness regarding neurosurgical care in Mexico. These findings can be instrumental for developing healthcare policies that address the needs of Mexico's patient population.

Nucleus pulposus cells survive in a hypoxic, acidic, nutrient-poor, and hypotonic microenvironment. Consequently, they maintain low proliferation and undergo autophagy to protect themselves from cellular stress. Therefore, we aimed to identify autophagy-related biomarkers involved in intervertebral disc degeneration pathogenesis. ⋯ Nine hub genes were identified and a network of competing endogenous RNA associated with autophagy was established. They can be used as autophagy-related biomarkers of intervertebral disc degeneration and for further exploration.

Supratentorial craniotomy represents the upper part of the combined trans-tentorial or the supra-infratentorial presigmoid approach. In this study, we provide qualitative and quantitative analyses for the supratentorial extension of the presigmoid retrolabyrinthine suprameatal approach (PRSA). ⋯ The supratentorial extension of PRSA allows access to the supra-trigeminal area of the pons and the lower part of the midbrain. Considering this surgical accessibility and exposure significantly assists in planning such complex approaches while targeting central skull base lesions.

The SpineST-01 system is an image-guided vertebrae cannulation training system. During task execution, the computer calculates performance-based metrics displaying different visual perspectives (lateral view, axial view, anteroposterior view) with the position of the instrument inside the vertebra. Finally, a report with the metrics is generated as performance feedback. ⋯ Initial testing of the SpineST-01 demonstrated potential for the system to practice image-guided cannulation tasks on lumbar vertebrae. Results showed objective differences between experts, intermediates, and novices in the proposed metrics, making this system a feasible option for developing basic navigation system skills without the risk of radiation exposure and objectively evaluating task performance.
