Multiple occipital bone lytic lesions containing ectopic cerebellar parenchyma mimicking neoplasia.
Nonlethal neural tube defects are developmental malformations with complex pathogenesis usually manifested at birth or in childhood. ⋯ To our knowledge, this study describes the oldest individual presenting with ectopic cerebellar tissue and the only instance in which oncologic workup for malignancy was carried out prior to resection. It also proposes surgical resection as a diagnostic and curative approach for this complex basicranium and neural developmental defect, and discusses retinoic acid toxicity as a possible cause of its occurrence.

To assess the efficacy and safety of surgery for dysphagia in anterior cervical idiopathic hyperostosis. ⋯ Anterior cervical hyperostosis causing dysphagia typically affects older men and results from compression between C3 and C5 from osteophytes of variable sizes. Operative intervention can provide long-lasting resolution of symptoms but is complicated by difficulty in endotracheal intubation, postoperative dysphagia, and rarely respiratory compromise. A systematic preoperative ear, nose, and throat consultation is recommended to reduce these complications.

Increasing evidence points monocytes' role to be larger than thought in developing cerebral infarction (CI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). However, there is no clinical evidence of the relationship between peripheral monocytes and CI and clinical outcomes. Therefore we determine whether an increase in monocytes in the acute phase is useful to predict CI and functional outcomes in SAH patients. ⋯ Increased peripheral monocytes at admission is a risk factor for developing CI after SAH. Moreover, short- and long-term poor clinical outcomes were associated with higher monocyte count. Therefore monocytes could be a convenient biomarker for prognosis unfavorable outcomes and a possible target for new therapeutic strategies.

Bibliometric indexes are often used to evaluate and compare neurosurgeons and departments, and they have been shown to correlate with academic rank and department reputation. We evaluated academic productivity of neurosurgeons practicing in departments accredited by the Joint Residency Advisory and Accreditation Committee and European Association of Neurological Surgeons. ⋯ This is the first study to evaluate academic productivity of neurosurgeons practicing in Europe and Turkey. Higher academic rank and advanced research degree were associated with greater academic productivity. Further studies exploring regional differences in academic productivity of European neurosurgeons are encouraged.

Recent literature has shown significant differences in meningioma incidence among different races, but minimal conclusive data exist on the role of race and ethnicity in overall survival for patients with high-grade intracranial meningioma. We conducted a systematic review to investigate the impact of race and ethnicity on survival in patients with high-grade intracranial meningioma. ⋯ The limited data available suggest that White patients have improved measures of survival compared with nonw-White patients, for reasons that are likely complex and multifactorial. Further studies are needed to explore these survival differences seen.
