The Historical Evolution of Intracranial Pressure Monitoring.
Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring has become an important tool in neurocritical care. Despite being used in intensive care units all over the world, many are unfamiliar with its origins and the people and events that shaped the development of this technique. Herein, we provide a comprehensive historical review of the evolution of ICP monitoring, beginning with the earliest descriptions of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). ⋯ Thenceforward, ICP monitoring technology underwent progressive improvements through the contributions of French scientists Jean Guillaume and Pierre Janny, Swedish neurosurgeon Nils Lundberg, among others. Nowadays, ICP monitoring can be performed via direct and indirect methods using a potpourri of devices such as, but not limited to, subarachnoid bolts, microtransducer catheters, and telemetric monitors. Nevertheless, despite advancements in ICP monitoring technology, the criterion standard remains an extraventricular drain catheter connected to an external pressure transducer.

Minimum 2-year Efficacy of Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy Versus Microendoscopic Discectomy: a Meta-analysis.
Minimally invasive surgery in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation has gained popularity in recent years, as 2 dominant techniques, percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) and microendoscopic discectomy (MED) obtained comparable short-term clinical outcomes. However, midterm and long-term efficacy and reoperative rate are still debated. ⋯ Both PELD and MED can offer relatively effective and safe treatment for low back pain and radiculopathy associated with a herniated disc. PELD could obtain better midterm and long-term clinical outcomes compared with MED.

Posterior fossa dimensions of Chiari malformation patients compared with normal subjects: systematic review and metanalysis.
Chiari malformation (CM) is defined as a herniation of cerebellar tonsils below the foramen magnum and is considered to be due to underdevelopment of posterior fossa (PF) bone components. There is overcrowding of neural structures, and normal cerebrospinal fluid circulation is frequently blocked. Although several publications exist of measurements of dimensions and volumes from bone components of PF in CM, there is no systematic review evaluating quantitatively these dimensions. The aim of this study was to evaluate PF dimensions and volumes in a meta-analysis. ⋯ This review provides evidence of smaller measurements of clivus, supraoccipital bone, and PF area dimensions in patients with CM compared with normal subjects. An implication of the key findings is that surgical treatment of CMs should consider the smaller dimensions of PF in planning.

The superficial temporal artery (STA) to middle cerebral artery (MCA) bypass is an effective treatment procedure for steno-occlusive severe ischemic disease of the anterior circulation. The formation of an aneurysm at the anastomosis site is a rare complication, and the mechanism underlying this condition and the appropriate treatment strategy, have not yet been established. We describe a case of an unruptured anastomosis aneurysm that was treated by endovascular embolization 7 years after bypass surgery. ⋯ Endovascular treatment is a feasible and efficacious treatment option for an aneurysm at the anastomosis site of an STA-MCA bypass.

Transcorporeal Tunnel Approach for Cervical Radiculopathy and Myelopathy: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
The transcorporeal tunnel approach is a relatively new alternative of anterior cervical decompression and fusion for the treatment of cervical radiculopathy and myelopathy, with its main presumed advantage being the preservation of the intervertebral space. The aim of the present article is to present the outcomes of the systematic review and meta-analysis regarding the short-term outcomes of this surgical technique. ⋯ Although technically challenging, like all minimally invasive methods, the transcorporeal tunnel approach seems to be a safe and efficient option for the treatment of cervical radiculopathy and myelopathy, presenting comparable outcome profiles to alternative open or less invasive techniques.
