To study the natural growth dynamics of skull base chordomas. ⋯ The skull base chordoma is a slow-growing tumor. The cases involving characteristics of female gender, endophytic type, small tumor size, and MR grade 3 showed a higher growth rate.

Allicin can suppress liver and cardiac fibrosis; thus, we hypothesized that it might prevent scar tissue from extensive epidural fibrosis after laminectomy. ⋯ Allicin can suppress human epidural scar fibroblast migration, induce cell apoptosis, and block cell proliferation at S phase and G2 phase.

The present study aimed to characterize the mechanism of fluid shear stress (FSS)-induced endothelial cell (EC) injury via protein kinase C alpha (PKCα)-mediated vascular endothelial cadherin (VE-cadherin) and p120-catenin (p120ctn) expression. ⋯ The possible mechanism of FSS-induced EC injury may be as follows: 1) PKCα induces low expression of p120ctn, which leads to activation of NF-κB and degradation of VE-cadherin; 2) PKCα-mediated phosphorylation of p120ctn at S879 disrupts p120ctn binding to VE-cadherin.

Meningiomas are among the most common primary intracranial tumors. Up to 20% of cases will show increased malignancy at histological examination (World Health Organization grade II or III). Effective pharmacotherapy, except for radiotherapy, is lacking. Therefore, it is necessary to study the pathogenesis of malignant meningioma to provide more treatment strategies. ⋯ Our results have suggested a tumor suppressive role for miR-195 in the tumorigenesis and progression of malignant meningioma by targeting FASN. In addition, NUP210, SPIRE2, SLC7A1, and DMTN might act as ceRNAs to regulate FASN expression by sponging miR-195.

Standard treatment of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) involves reduction of intracranial pressure (ICP) to normal range, often via a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS). We describe a case of a middle-aged man who presented with symptoms consistent with IIH. After ICP was normalized with a VPS, the patient had neurologic deterioration into a coma. He completely recovered after a month when his ICP was allowed to increase and remain above the normal range. ⋯ In patients with chronic IIH, reduction to normal ICP may unexpectedly lead to encephalopathic changes. Personalized shunts may facilitate reduction of ICP to still elevated but tolerable levels in these patients.
