Ventriculostomy, one of the most common neurosurgical procedures, involves inserting a draining catheter into the brain's ventricular system to alleviate excessive cerebrospinal fluid accumulation. Traditionally, this procedure has relied on freehand techniques guided by anatomical landmarks, which have shown a high rate of misplacement. Recent advancements in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have opened up new possibilities in the field. This comprehensive review aims to analyze the existing literature, examine the diverse applications of VR and AR in ventriculostomy procedures, address their limitations, and propose potential future directions. ⋯ The review delves into the fundamental challenges encountered in the implementation of VR and AR systems in ventriculostomy. Additionally, potential future directions and areas for improvement are proposed, addressing the identified limitations and paving the way for further advancements in the field.

Pediatric hydrocephalus is a significant health burden globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Data from specific regions such as KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, are lacking. This study aimed to investigate pediatric hydrocephalus by comparing 4 distinct 5-year periods. ⋯ This study provides comprehensive insights into pediatric hydrocephalus in KwaZulu-Natal. Monitoring temporal trends and predictors of outcomes will guide future interventions to mitigate the burden of pediatric hydrocephalus in the region.

Efficacy of Mind-Regulating and Depression-Reliving Acupuncture in combination with Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation of Dorsal Root Ganglion for Post-herpetic Neuralgia.
This study is aimed at evaluating the efficacy of mind-regulating and depression-relieving acupuncture in combination with radiofrequency thermocoagulation of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) for post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). ⋯ Compared with RFTC alone, acupuncture combined with RFTC of DRG has a better therapeutic effect for PHN.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of patient-tailored 3D printed brace in the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), and to compare the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients treated with 2 different types of brace. ⋯ A patient-tailored 3D-printed brace is lighter, thinner, and more comfortable than conventional braces in the treatment of AIS. It can substantially improve the HRQoL of patients and can significantly reduce the progression of major curve Cobb progression and rate of conversion of surgery.

Despite their asymptomatic occurrence, unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) account for a significant proportion of hospital charges and healthcare resource utilization in the United States. Hospital length of stay (LOS) is a reimbursement metric utilized to incentivize value-based care. Our study identifies predictors of extended LOS (eLOS) after elective treatment of UIAs. ⋯ Our study identified predictors of eLOS that could help promote risk stratification prior to treatment of UIAs. Future research that identifies predictors of long-term outcomes based on treatment modality could help identify ways to improve healthcare resource utilization in this cohort.
