Common sequelae of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) include somatic and/or cognitive impairment. This can cause emotional stress, social tensions, and difficulties in relationships. To test our hypothesis that more severe somatic and cognitive impairments increased the likelihood of disruption of a relationship after SAH, we assessed the integrity of marriage or partnership status in a well-evaluated subset of SAH patients. ⋯ Contrary to our hypothesis, neither the presence of severe somatic or cognitive deficits nor clinical evaluation scores reliably predicted divorce or separation after SAH.

To understand the development of sporadic cerebral cavernous malformations (SCCM) comprehensively, we analyzed gene expression profiles in SCCMs by gene microarray. ⋯ The gene expression profiles obtained from SCCMs were significantly distinct from those of control brain vascular specimens. These DEGs are related to multiple molecular signal pathways, such as the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, focal adhesion, and inflammatory response. According to the analysis of the core genes selected in the gene coexpression networks, we postulated that CSF1R, XCL1, KCNMB1, RHOG, and TJP1 might exert enormous functions in the pathogenesis of SCCMs. However, further studies are required to aid in the clinical diagnosis and prevention of SCCMs.

For the first time in Southeast Asia, a Fundamentals of Neurosurgery Boot Camp was held at the University of Medicine 1 in Yangon, Myanmar, February 24-26, 2017. The aim of this course was to teach and train fundamental skills to neurosurgery residents. ⋯ Boot camps provide fundamental didactic and technical exposure to trainees in developed and developing countries and help standardize training in basic neurosurgical competencies, while exposing local faculty to important teaching methods. This model provides a sustainable solution to educational needs and demonstrates to local neurosurgeons how they can take ownership of the educational process.

The limbic tracts are involved in crucial cerebral functions such as memory, emotion, and behavior. The complex architecture of the limbic circuit makes it harder to approach compared with other white matter networks. Our study aims to describe the 3-dimensional anatomy of the limbic white matter by the use of 2 complementary study methods, namely ex vivo fiber dissection and in vivo magnetic resonance imaging-based tractography. ⋯ This paper proposes a fiber-tracking protocol for the limbic tracts inspired and validated by fiber dissection findings that can be used routinely in the clinical practice.

To explore whether the iliac wing influences L5 pedicle screw (PS) fixation and to propose methods to reduce such influence. ⋯ This study elucidates the influence of the iliac wing on L5 PS fixation. Careful attention is required when implanting PSs, especially in male patients. The combined use of Du's technique and a percutaneous method for PS implantation effectively reduces the influence of the iliac wing. To minimize the complications of PS fixation further, preoperative simulation of fixation for each patient is very important.
