In the past decade, neurosurgery in Uganda experienced increasing surgical volume and a new residency training program. Although research has examined surgical capacity, minimal data exist on the patient population treated by neurosurgery and their eventual outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. ⋯ The neurosurgical service provided health care to a large proportion of nonoperative patients. Phone surveys captured data on patients in whom nearly one-half would be lost to subsequent health care. Although mortality during initial hospitalization was high, more than 90% of those discharged survived at 1-year follow up, and the vast majority returned to work and school.

There is an abundance of works published on severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI). Bibliometric analyses aim to provide a macroscopic view of research activities regarding sTBI and are helpful in determining the most impactful studies within this field. ⋯ The present study provides a cross-sectional summary of the 100 most-cited articles on sTBI, highlighting areas of research needing further investigation and development.

Changes of Facet Joints After Dynamic Stabilization: Continuous Degeneration or Slow Fusion?
The nonfusion pedicle-screw system Dynesys stabilization (DS) for lumbar degenerative disease aims to better preserve range of motion (ROM) than fixation and fusion systems. However, decreased ROM and unexpected facet fusion at the index level were observed after DS was applied with unknown etiology. The aim of this study is using radiologic parameters to explain the phenomenon of facet arthrodesis. ⋯ The patients who underwent DS for L4-5 grade 1 spondylolisthesis experienced significantly reduced ROM and a positive correlation of facet degeneration over time postoperatively. The limited ROM at the index level could be a potential risk of facet degeneration and cause unexpected arthrodesis.

This retrospective cohort study was performed to investigate clinical efficacy of TBGA compared with pedicle screw fixation (PSF). ⋯ TBGA can achieve satisfactory clinical effects in treatment of simple TLCF. TBGA involves shorter operative time, less blood loss, lower RASP, and lower complication rates and could be more suitable for the surgical treatment of simple TLCF.

Serum Malondialdehyde Levels and Mortality in Patients with Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage.
Oxidative stress has been associated with secondary brain injury after spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (SIH). Malondialdehyde (MDA) appears in blood during lipid oxidation. Higher serum MDA levels have been found in patients with SIH than in healthy controls; however, we have not found data indicating an association between elevated serum MDA and early mortality in this population. This was the main objective of our study. ⋯ The most important new finding of our study is that there is an association between serum MDA levels at diagnosis of severe SIH and early mortality.
