Review Case Reports
Intraocular silicone oil migration into the ventricles resembling intraventricular hemorrhage. Case report and review of literature.
Intracranial silicone migration is a rare complication of ocular silicone oil endotamponade and may resemble intraventricular hemorrhage. The etiology of the phenomenon is challenging to understand. ⋯ The literature is reviewed through the perspective of pathophysiology. The migration of intraocular silicone oil into the ventricular system provides both an important complication for clinicians to be aware of, as well as a paradigm reminding us that cerebrospinal fluid spaces may have more extensive communications with other body compartments than previously thought.

Therapy for recurrent high-grade gliomas: Results of a prospective multicenter study on health-related quality of life.
To assess the impact of therapy on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in recurrent high-grade glioma (HGG) in an unselected cohort. ⋯ Our results from an unselected cohort of recurrent HGGs show that the currently available treatment options have no negative impact on HRQoL. Thus, treatment decisions can be made individually, without fear of jeopardizing HRQoL for better survival. Only, the third recurrent surgery remains a very individual decision even in younger patients with high Karnofsky Performance Score.

Epidemiology and Characteristics of Neurosurgical Conditions at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
The unmet surgical need, specifically neurosurgical need, in Uganda is significant, yet only 2 public hospitals currently perform neurosurgery in the country. This study examines the epidemiology and outcomes of neurosurgical conditions presenting to 1 of 12 regional referral hospitals in Uganda, in an effort to understand the neurosurgical needs of this population. ⋯ Traumatic brain injury represented the majority of neurosurgical admissions at MRRH, disproportionately affecting young males. Age, closed head injury, admission Glasgow Coma Scale, getting a diagnostic image, and neurosurgical procedure were all independent predictors of mortality. Resource appropriate interventions throughout the health system are needed to meet the demand and improve outcomes.

Postural instability and gait disorder (PIGD) in Parkinson disease (PD) has been a great challenge in clinical practice because PIGD is closely linked to major morbidity and mortality in PD. Pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) has been considered as a potential promising target for deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the treatment of PIGD. A meta-analysis of individual patient data was performed to assess the effects of PPN DBS on PIGD in patients with PD and explore the factors predicting good outcome. ⋯ Our study provides evidence that PPN DBS may improve PIGD, which should be interpreted with caution and needs further verification before making generalization of our results.

Prophylactic levetiracetam for seizure control after cranioplasty: a multicenter prospective controlled study.
To study efficacy and safety of prophylactic levetiracetam (LEV) administration in adults undergoing cranioplasty. ⋯ Postoperative seizure is a common complication of cranioplasty, especially in patients with preoperative or postoperative abnormal EEG with spikes or sharp waves. Prophylactic LEV administration significantly reduced postcranioplasty seizures during LEV usage and had few side effects.
