Obesity can be associated with increased complications and potentially worse outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the impact of obesity on complications and outcomes in patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD) who underwent minimally invasive surgery (MIS). ⋯ Our results suggest that obesity does not negatively impact complication rate or clinical outcomes in patients with ASD treated via MIS approaches.

Intracranial aneurysms constitute a significant part of the caseload for any neurosurgical service. Despite the occurrence of intracranial aneurysms and the availability of advanced diagnostic tools and management options, there is a paucity of published data concerning aneurysm patterns in Kenya. ⋯ Most patients were postmenopausal women, who had a higher rate of aneurysms with an elevated risk of rupture for small aneurysms; this suggests that clinicians need to be more vigilant and have a higher index of suspicion in such patients with subtle clinical signs. This study revealed a pattern of aneurysms in accord with previous reports and is expected to serve as a basis for further research on aneurysm management, outcome, and prognostic indicators in the Kenyan population.

Surgical strategy for complex anterior cerebral artery aneurysms: retrospective case series and literature review.
Giant, or complex, aneurysms of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) are rare, but their surgical treatment is important. The authors describe their experiences with bypasses for complex ACA aneurysms and discuss the new classification of ACA bypasses, the concept of using bypasses for insurance during the approach to the aneurysm, and simplifying the surgical algorithms for these complex ACA aneurysms. ⋯ Surgical treatment of complex ACA aneurysms requires knowledge of a variety of bypass techniques. Although the type of bypass should be selected according to patient-specific anatomy and the neurosurgeon's preference, the new classification of bypass-specified ACA aneurysms may alter the way surgeons think about ACA bypasses, and in combination with the concept of the protective bypass, can be used to establish a comprehensive algorithm for each type of complex ACA aneurysm.

This prospective cohort-designed study was performed to verify whether higher levels of serum lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) could be a risk factor for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in Chinese patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI). ⋯ Increased serum Lp(a) levels were independent predictors of DVT in patients with SCI in China, suggesting a possible role of Lp(a) in the pathogenesis of DVT.

Missed or Delayed Cervical Spine or Spinal Cord Injuries Treated at a Tertiary Referral Hospital in Rwanda.
This study was aimed at 1) reporting cases of missed cervical spine injuries treated at a tertiary-level hospital, King Faisal Hospital, Rwanda (KFH-R), and 2) identifying the causes of delaying the diagnosis. ⋯ This study found that the cervical spine injuries were missed in 9.5% of the cervical spine trauma patients and resulted in a longer hospital stay for all 4 patients and severe disability in 1 patient (25%). The reasons for missed diagnoses in this study were 1) lack of cervical spine radiographic evaluation, 2) inadequate cervical spine radiographs to show the level of injury, 3) poor sensitivity of cervical spine plain radiography, 4) poor physical examination, 5) the presence of a distracting injury, and 6) poor sensitivity of radiographs and computed tomography scans for soft tissue injuries.
