Exposure to surgical subspecialties is limited during the preclinical years of medical school. To offset this limitation, the authors created a neurosurgery elective for first- and second-year medical students. The objective was to provide each student with early exposure to neurosurgery by combining clinical experience with faculty discussions about the academic and personal realities of a career in neurosurgery. ⋯ The neurosurgery elective course significantly increased student knowledge across several areas and changed perceptions about collegiality, quality of life, and family-work balance, while not altering the students' views about the difficulty of training. Adopting a neurosurgery elective geared towards preclinical medical students can significantly change attitudes about the field of neurosurgery and has potential to increase interest in pursuing a career in neurosurgery.

Experimental Evaluation Of The Developmental Mechanism Underlying Fractures At The Adjacent Segment.
Compression fractures at adjacent mobile segments have been reported as adjacent segment disease under trauma in several studies. In this study, the occurrence of fractures at the adjacent segment was evaluated experimentally under trauma. ⋯ The dynamic system with a polyetheretherketone rod can better preserve both adjacent and fixed segments. However, because of the cantilever beam effect, the semirigid system exhibits a great disadvantage.

Primary intracranial sarcoma presenting as chronic subdural fluid collections in a child - report of a case.
Chronic subdural hematoma in the pediatric population often results from trauma. Asymptomatic and benign-appearing subdural collections are generally managed conservatively without operative intervention. Primary intracranial sarcomas are uncommon entities. Diagnosis of sarcoma can be difficult because these lesions often manifest as apparent hematoma. ⋯ Early contrasted magnetic resonance imaging should be obtained in patients with subdural fluid collections that appear asymmetric or do not resolve in the expected time course, despite having a normal neurologic examination result. Negative cytologic assessment does not exclude sarcoma diagnosis.

The role of the overall structural feature of facet joint in the development of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the role of irregular alteration of facet orientation (IAFO) in low lumbar segments in the pathology of LDH in adolescents. ⋯ The findings of this study suggest that the IAFO in the lumbar spine was associated with lumbar disc herniation in adolescents.
