Outcomes of fusion for lateral atlantoaxial osteoarthritis: meta-analysis and review of literature.
Atlantoaxial osteoarthritis (AAOA) is an underrecognized source of neck pain, limitation of range of motion, and cervicogenic headaches. When conservative treatments such as facet injections fail, fusion may be indicated. We reviewed published series describing posterior fusions for atlantoaxial osteoarthritis of the facet joints. ⋯ Posterior C1-2 fusion is a safe and effective treatment option for patients with intractable neck pain secondary to lateral AAOA. Modern fusion options offer a high rate of arthrodesis and low risk of morbidity if conservative therapies fail to provide adequate pain relief.

To assess the safety of the suprabrow approach (SBCA) for aneurysm surgery by comparing intraoperative rupture rates with those for the standard pterional approach. ⋯ The rate of intraoperative rupture is significantly higher when ruptured aneurysms are operated with the SBCA (in comparison to the pterional approach). However, the SBCA may be safer for unruptured and middle cerebral artery aneurysms with a lower rate of IOR.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has emerged as a treatment for severe cases of therapy-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and promising results have been reported. The literature might, however, be somewhat unclear, considering the different targets used, and due to repeated inclusion of individual patients in multiple publications. The aim of this report was to review the literature on DBS for OCD. ⋯ DBS is a promising treatment for therapy-refractory OCD, but the published experience is limited and the method is at present an experimental therapy.

Traumatic brain injury in contact sports has significant impact on short-term neurologic and neurosurgical function as well as longer-term cognitive disability. In this study, we aim to demonstrate that contact sport participants exhibit differences in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) caused by repeated physical impacts on the brain. We also aim to determine that impact incurred by the contact sports athletes during the season may result in the differences between the pre- and postseason DTI scans. ⋯ There are significant DTI changes in the CC, the external capsule, the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, as well as regions such as the superior/posterior corona radiata the preseason contact versus the noncontact control athletes were compared and also when the postseason contact athletes with the control athletes were compared.

The differential diagnosis for suprasellar masses includes a variety of pathologies, ranging from stable and benign lesions to aggressive and malignant ones. We report a case of a suprasellar hamartoma associated with an arachnoid cyst and review the literature surrounding the topic. ⋯ To our knowledge this is only the third case of an isolated suprasellar hamartoma described in the literature and the first of its kind to be associated with an arachnoid cyst.
