The purpose is to investigate the impact of cage angle on clinical outcomes and indirect decompression efficacy in patients undergoing lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF). ⋯ LLIF effectively treats LDD patients, providing significant short-term clinical and radiographic improvements regardless of cage angle. However, oblique cage placement increases the risk of cage subsidence, requiring careful surgical planning and postoperative following.

The NEXUS criteria have been introduced in the 1990s to assist emergency department physicians to decide whether to perform radiographic work-up following cervical whiplash injury. Four criteria have been described on these profile radiographs of the cervical spine including angulation between cervical endplates, 3-mm listhesis, posterior facet joints overlap, and widened interspinous space. ⋯ Hence, we present the striking case of a young female patient whose radiographs displayed slight but abnormal signs of lower cervical spine instability, but was nonetheless discharged home with dynamic X-rays of the cervical spine to be performed in a delayed setting. We hope that these striking features will help us remind the importance of radiologic semiology of posttraumatic unstable cervical spine.

Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a condition burdened by high morbidity and mortality. Prevention of secondary insults is 1 of the main goals of management and intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is a cornerstone in management of TBI. The relationship between ICP and optic nerve sheath is known from the literature. Optic nerve sheath ultrasonography could represent a method added to our armamentarium for monitoring ICP. ⋯ We propose the use of ONSD ultrasound as a screening investigation for post-traumatic intracranial hypertension in the context of an emergency department, especially in contexts where there is limited availability of ICP monitors.

Historical roots of modern neurosurgical cadaveric research practices: dissection, preservation, and vascular injection techniques.
Because of the complexity of the brain and its structures, anatomical knowledge is fundamental in neurosurgery. Anatomical dissection, body preservation, and vascular injection remain essential for training, teaching, and refining surgical techniques. This article explores the historical development of these practices and provides the contextual background of modern neurosurgical cadaveric brain models. ⋯ In 1868, August Hofmann synthesized formaldehyde, markedly improving tissue preservation. Later, William Kruse introduced latex in 1939, and Sidney Sobin introduced silicone in 1965 for vascular studies. These advancements laid the foundation for modern neurosurgical cadaveric studies, many remaining relevant today.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor in older adults and has a poor prognosis and limited response to treatment. The growing impact of palliative care on older people undergoing neurosurgery is becoming increasingly important. Palliative care aims to improve the quality of life for people and their families by addressing their physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs. ⋯ Nonetheless, there are similarities between the needs of people with GBM and those with other, more common cancer diagnoses and nonmalignant chronic neurologic illnesses. The integration of palliative care into the management of older people with GBM during neurosurgery is crucial for addressing their unique needs and improving their quality of life. In this review, we aimed to comprehensively evaluate the impact of palliative care on people with GBM and its importance.
