1. The growing aged population in the United States will result in an increase in nursing home patients, and in numbers of employees in these homes providing care to patients. Nurses' aides, an employee group that has not received much attention, will be the primary providers of this patient care. 2. ⋯ A large scale study should be done to determine the extent of abuse/violence directed toward nursing home employees. 4. If abuse is validated as a problem, aides should receive training in handling abusive patients. In addition, it is important to identify the factors related to patients' abusive behaviors and to test mechanisms for reducing these behaviors.

The "Europe Against Cancer" initiative seeks to reduce the prevalence of cancer by 15% by the year 2000. This has stimulated an increased awareness of cancer by health care professionals. ⋯ It also seeks to enable the development of care and rehabilitation support programs in the workplace. The process of developing the training manual involving occupational health and health education staff is considered to be part of its success.

1. Managers must be knowledgeable about AIDS and able to act on issues that surface in the workplace. Some of these issues are discrimination, fear, and confidentiality. 2. ⋯ This education results in a more productive work environment. 3. To deal with AIDS in the workplace in a socially responsible manner, every company must have guidelines and provide a source of education. This education must be readily available and easily understood by all employees, who may have differing educational levels.

It is inevitable that every workplace will someday be affected by an employee with AIDS or positive HIV. Policy and education should be in place before the first case appears. ⋯ Other problems that may occur and disrupt the work force are: concerns of coworkers, legal issues, and problems with confidentiality. The occupational health nurse is a key figure in the development of policy and planning for education of all employees.
