The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the challenges of the 21st century; science and technology were put to the test for the development vaccines, diagnostic techniques and treatments in record time. However, misinformation and misinterpretation have made the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines a subject of debate. This review addresses concepts on immunization mechanisms and vaccination, as well as evidence supporting that COVID-19 vaccines are immunogenic, efficacious and safe.

Complement regulatory proteins (mCRPs) CD55, CD46 and CD59 have been proposed as key elements in therapeutic resistance against cancer. mCRP-expressing tumor cells, in addition to hindering trastuzumab, pertuzumab and sacituzumab-govitecan therapeutic activity in breast cancer, can regulate biological processes that promote tumor progression. This review describes the structure of mCRPs and analyzes their expression using transcriptomic databases from breast cancer patients, in addition to collecting information on mCRPs interactions and signaling in tumor cells. Given that mCRPs are relevant targets, several strategies that have been explored for their inhibition and regulation in order to increase therapeutic efficacy and prevent cancer resistance and progression are described.

The decision to get involved in the study and practice of medicine is not easy. Within the scientific environment, achieving both professional and personal success requires a strict discipline, where effort becomes an essential part of daily life; in addition, having family support becomes crucial in order for not to lose hope when confronting the different adversities that arise during medical training. ⋯ From this study, it is possible to show the great influence that some doctors have in their family environment, which makes the study of medicine attractive as a life project.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is the cause of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has a high case fatality rate. Most severely ill patients develop a special type of coagulopathy that had not been described before and that is now considered the main cause of death. ⋯ However, the rate at which the evidence regarding the use of anticoagulants is generated is quite fast, and sometimes it is difficult to interpret and conflicting. After having performed an extensive review of the published literature, this proposal for the use of anticoagulant treatment is made, taking into account available resources in Mexico.

The first cases of COVID-19, caused by the virus called SARS-CoV-2, were recorded in Wuhan, China, in December 2019; however, its transmission ability caused for the infection to be practically present throughout the world six months later. The origin of the virus appears to be zoonotic; it has been proposed that it comes from a bat and that it may have had an intermediate host that led to its introduction in the human population. ⋯ Almost since the beginning of the epidemic, several molecules have been proposed for the treatment of infection; however, there is not yet a drug available with sufficient effectiveness for treatment. This review describes SARS-CoV-2 main characteristics, its replicative cycle, its possible origin and some advances in the development of antiviral treatments.
