Comparison of the maternal and neonatal effects of bupivacaine plus fentanyl and ropivacaine plus fentanyl during cesarean delivery.
The aim of the present study was to compare the anesthetic efficacy, and fetal and maternal effects of 7.5 mg (1 ml) intrathecal 0.75% hyperbaric ropivacaine + 25 μg (0.5 ml) fentanyl versus 5 mg (l ml) intrathecal 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine + 25 μg (0.5 ml) fentanyl in elective cesarean delivery. ⋯ In elective cesarean delivery, the combinations of bupivacaine + fentanyl or ropivacaine + fentanyl exhibited similar anesthetic efficacy, and fetal and maternal effects.

Facet joints infiltration: a viable alternative treatment to physiotherapy in patients with low back pain due to facet joint arthropathy.
There is a paucity of information on treatment options and outcome of treatment of patients that have MRI findings of FJA presenting with low back pain in the developing country. This prospective cohort study conducted mainly in the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital Gwagwalada, Abuja Nigeria is to compare the short-term clinical outcome between two groups, one having undergone facet joints infiltration (FJI) and the other physiotherapy for facet joint arthropathy (FJA). ⋯ FJI offered added benefit over physiotherapy in LBPs diagnosed with FJA. Patients with FJI have a significant reduction in pain symptom than the patients in the physiotherapy group. Though majority of the patients reported satisfactory outcome, the FJI patients group had a better outcome.

The effect of propofol lipuro with and without lidocaine on injection pain in children.
Despite advantages of propofol use such as providing a good anesthesia and rapid recovery; pain due to intravenous propofol injection continues to be a problem. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of generic propofol and propofol lipuro with and without lidocaine on injection pain in children. ⋯ The highest pain scores were found in the propofol lipuro without lidocaine use while propofol lipuro plus lidocaine had the lowest pain scores. Because adding lidocaine to propofol lipuro decreased injection pain scores to minimum levels, this practice seems to be the most appropriate alternative in order to diminish propofol injection pain during anesthesia in children.

Prevalence of pin tract infection: the role of combined silver sulphadiazine and chlorhexidine dressing.
Infection at the pin tract is a common complication of external fixation. This study was done to compare the rate of pin site infection following combined 1% silver sulphadiazine and 5 % chlorbexidine dressing with 5% chlorhexidine dressing alone. ⋯ There was a significantly lower prevalence of pin-tract infection amongst patients whose external fixation pins were dressed with 1% silver sulphadiazine and 5% chlorhexidine than in those dressed with chlorhexidine alone (P = 0.03). Therefore, we advocate the use of a combination of silver sulphadiazine and chlorhexidine for pin site dressing.

Glycated haemoglobin and glycaemic control of diabetics in Ilorin.
With increasing adoption of Western Lifestyle in Nigeria, the incidence of Diabetes Mellitus is on the increase in the country with its attendant complications. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of patients at risk of developing diabetic complications in Ilorin, Nigeria, among our patients with diabetes mellitus. ⋯ The mean HbA1c values between the patients and the control subjects were significantly different. Diabetics in our environment with mean HbA1c value of 8.0% are prone to developing complications because of poor glycaemic control. We therefore advise that, periodic estimation ofglycated haemoglobin be carried out along side fasting blood glucose, in our diabetics.
