The aim of this study is to study subclinical platelet activation by detecting three important platelet activation parameters of mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateletcrit (PCT) in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) in comparison to those in healthy control subjects. ⋯ Subclinical platelet activation reflected by MPV, PDW, and PCT may have an impact on the genesis of vessel occlusion in BRVO. The results may be important for the clinical management of patients with BRVO

Evaluation of myocardial dispersion of repolarization in patients with heart transplantation
The number of patients with heart transplantation has dramatically increased in the last decade. Considerable studies have suggested that the interval from the peak to the end of the electrocardiographic T wave (Tp-e) may correspond to the transmural dispersion of repolarization and increased Tp-e interval and Tp-e/QT ratio are associated with malignant ventricular arrhythmias. We analyzed the dispersion of myocardial repolarization using electrocardiographic Tp-e interval and Tp-e/QTc ratio in patients with heart transplantation. ⋯ Patients with heart transplantation have increased myocardial dispersion of repolarization.

Thiol-specific antioxidant (TSA) protein is one of the most promising molecules among candidates for vaccine against cutaneous leishmaniasis. It was found to be significantly protective against different Leishmania species. In this study, cloning and molecular characterization of thiol-specific antioxidant gene of L. tropica Turkey isolate (LtTSA) were aimed. ⋯ LtTSA and its encoded TSA protein were found to be highly immunogenic and similar to TSA proteins previously tested as a vaccine candidate.

Results show that oxidative stress is a pathophysiologic factor for alopecia areata (AA); however, the markers used can be confounding. Thus, we aimed to investigate the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of AA through an evaluation of ischemia-modified albumin (IMA); other markers of the oxidant/antioxidant system, such as SOD, CAT, GSH-ST, and MDA; and contributing clinical risk factors. ⋯ Long-lasting disease, male sex, >1 site of involvement of disease, and increased severity of disease were correlated with increased oxidation. Presence of AA, male sex, and severe disease were determined to be independent risk factors for antioxidant and oxidant systems. IMA has great potential as a biomarker of oxidative stress in AA when compared to other studied biomarkers.

Comparison of conventional and modern methods in determining ischemic stroke etiology by general and stroke neurologists
This study aimed to investigate the consistency between stroke and general neurologists in subtype assignment using the Trial of ORG-10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) and Causative Classification of Stroke (CCS) systems. ⋯ The CCS system improved compliance in both stroke and general neurologists compared with TOAST. This suggests that the automatic, evidence-based, easily reproducible CCS system was superior to the TOAST system.
