Reproducibility and Validity of the 6-Minute Stationary Walk Test Associated With Virtual Reality in Subjects With COPD.
The importance of evaluating the functional capacity of patients with COPD is well known, and there is a wide range of tests described in the literature. The 6-min stationary walk test associated with virtual reality (STVR-6) was created in light of the current limitations of evaluation tests. It does not require a large physical space or sophisticated equipment, and it is not costly; furthermore, it can be performed by a single rater. The objective of this study was to evaluate intra- and inter-rater reproducibility and to verify the criterion validity of the STVR-6. ⋯ STVR-6 had excellent intra-rater reproducibility and excellent to good inter-rater reproducibility, but the high values of error measures demonstrated that there is a learning effect and a need to perform at least 2 tests. In addition, there was high to moderate correlation between the STVR-6 and the 6-min walk test. Therefore, the STVR-6 proved to be reproducible and valid for evaluating the functional capacity of subjects with COPD.

Effects of Electrical Muscle Stimulation in Subjects Undergoing Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation.
Muscle atrophy and deconditioning are common complications in patients on prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV). There are few studies that reviewed the effects of electrical muscle stimulation in this population. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of electrical muscle stimulation on muscle function and hospitalization outcomes in subjects with PMV. ⋯ Electrical muscle stimulation enhanced muscle strength in subjects who received PMV. Electrical muscle stimulation can be considered a preventive strategy for muscle weakness in patients who receive PMV. (ClinicalTrials.gov registration NCT02227810.).

Effect of High-Flow Nasal Cannula on Thoraco-Abdominal Synchrony in Pediatric Subjects After Cardiac Surgery.
We previously reported the effects of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy on thoraco-abdominal synchrony. This study was designed to clarify the effect of HFNC on thoraco-abdominal synchrony in pediatric subjects after cardiac surgery and to investigate HFNC optimal flow in this population. ⋯ After cardiac surgery, HFNC oxygen therapy at 2 L/kg/min improved thoraco-abdominal synchrony and decreased breathing frequency in pediatric subjects. Silver-Coated Endotracheal Tubes Cleaned With a Mechanism for Secretion Removal.
Biofilm on the surface of endotracheal tubes (ETTs) is associated with ventilator-associated pneumonia. The use of silver-coated ETTs has been suggested to reduce the occurrence of ventilator-associated pneumonia by preventing biofilm formation. However, mucus accumulation can reduce the antibacterial activity of silver-coated ETTs by isolating bacterial colonies from the silver surface. We hypothesized that, in mechanically ventilated subjects, periodic removal of secretions through the use of a cleaning device would enhance the antimicrobial properties of silver-coated ETTs and thus reduce bacterial colonization. ⋯ In 39 critically-ill subjects intubated with silver-coated ETTs, periodic cleaning maneuvers did not decrease bacterial colonization of the ETTs and did not lower respiratory tract colonization compared to the standard suctioning. Effects of Mechanical Insufflation-Exsufflation on Airway Mucus Clearance Among Mechanically Ventilated ICU Subjects.
Few studies have evaluated the effects of mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E) in subjects on mechanical ventilation. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of MI-E on airway mucus clearance among mechanically ventilated ICU subjects. ⋯ Among the general ICU subjects receiving mechanical ventilation, use of an MI-E device during respiratory physiotherapy resulted in a larger amount of airway mucus clearance than respiratory physiotherapy alone.
