Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial
[A randomized double-blind comparison of epidural versus intravenous tramadol infusion for postoperative analgesia].
This study compared epidural and intravenous tramadol infusions for postoperative analgesia after gastrectomy. ⋯ We conclude that intravenous tramadol infusion provides effective and safe postoperative analgesia. A futher examination is required for the suitable dose of tramadol in epidural infusion.

[Effects of landiolol on cardiovascular responses, bispectral index and body movement during endotracheal intubation].
We investigated the effects of a novel highly cardioselective short-acting beta-blocker, landiolol, on cardiovascular response, bispectral index and body movement during endotracheal ⋯ Our results suggest that landiolol infusion was effective to attenuate the hemodynamic, arousal and somatic responses to endotracheal intubation.

[Which anesthetic technique is more suitable for hip fracture surgery in patients above the age of 85, spinal or epidural?].
Anesthesia for hip fracture in elderly patients is a challenge because of their reduced functional reserve. We compared spinal and epidural anesthesia retrospectively in the operations of hip fracture in patients above the age of 85. ⋯ Spinal anesthesia is preferable for the operation for hip fracture compared with epidural anesthesia, because of fewer failed cases and smaller decreases of blood pressure.

We report a case of a 35-year-old woman with myotonic dystrophy and severe obesity of BMI 43.3 who showed persistent apnea at emergence after ovarian resection. The patient received an iv induction with minimum dose of propofol and vecuronium 3 mg. Anesthesia was maintained with propofol, 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen mixture and epidural anesthesia. ⋯ Spontaneous breathing at the rate of 17 x min(-1) started soon after extubation. We assume that this apnea was caused by breath holding. Whether this breath holding is specific to myotonic dystrophy or not, anesthesia for patients with this disease requires careful attention for perioperative respiratory management.

[Efficacy of continuous subcutaneous pentazocine infusion for the postoperative analgesia in lower abdominal surgery].
Continuous subcutaneous infusion (CSI) of analgesics may be an alternative for pain control in patients without an epidural catheter. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of CSI using pentazocine in lower abdominal surgery with inhalation anesthesia or with total intravenous anesthesia. ⋯ In patients undergoing lower abdominal surgery, CSI of pentazocine provided effective postoperative pain relief and effectiveness did not depend on anesthetics during anesthesia.
