Testing the Latino paradox in Latin America: a population-based study of Intra-regional immigrants in Chile.
Several studies in high-income countries report better health status of immigrants compared to the local population ("healthy migrant" effect), regardless of their socioeconomic deprivation. This is known as the Latino paradox. ⋯ The Latino paradox was not observed in Chile. Protecting low SES immigrants in Chile could have large positive effects in their health at arrival and over time.

Review[Initial resuscitation bundle and monitoring tissue perfusion in severe sepsis].
Sepsis is a global health problem. Despite recent advances in understanding its pathophysiology and clinical trials testing potential new therapies, mortality remains unacceptably high. ⋯ A systematic approach to the harmful triad of sepsis-related hypotension, tissue hypoperfusion and organ dysfunction, with low-cost, easy to implement, and effective interventions, can significantly improve the chances of survival. In this article, we will update the evidence supporting the initial resuscitation bundle for patients with severe sepsis, and discuss the physiological basis for perfusion monitoring during septic shock resuscitation.

Case Reports[Transient high frequency nodal rhythm after a high voltage electric shock. Report of one case].
Electrical shock can cause a direct myocardial damage and different types of arrhythmias, which are uncommon and occur more often when there is a high voltage exposure. We report a 19-year-old male that received a high voltage shock, falling thereafter from an altitude of four meters. ⋯ The electrocardiogram showed a nodal rhythm of 72 beats per minute. After four hours of monitoring, sinus rhythm returned spontaneously.

[Emergence of W135 meningococcal serogroup in Chile during 2012].
The epidemiologic behavior of the Invasive Meningococcal Disease (IMD) in Chile has changed. At the end of 2011, the W135 serogroup belonging to the hypervirulent clone ST-11 emerged. It affected diverse countries of the world, after the Mecca pilgrimage in 2000. ⋯ The predominant clinical presentation of the W135 serogroup was a sepsis in 67% of cases. The fatality ratio of IDM during 2012 was 27%, the highest in the past 20 years. With this information, the Chilean Ministry of Health decreed a sanitary alert and implemented an integrated approach to control and prevent W-135 IDM, denominated "W-135 Action Plan".
