Outer hair cells are believed to be responsible for generation of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs). High sensitivity of OAE makes it possible to diagnose subclinical cochlear pathologies even if they have not yet been revealed by tonal audiometry. The aim of this study was to evaluate an influence of general anesthesia and other drugs administered in pre- and post-operative period on TEOAE in subjects operated on for various congenital heart defects in extracorporeal circulation. ⋯ Among ototoxic drugs only acetylsalicylic acid affected TEOAE in post-operative tests. The authors conclude that general anaesthesia does not change the cochlear function, although, in children in whom acetylsalicylic acid was administered in post-operative period the cochlear function was affected. In these subjects the function of the cochlea should be monitored in post-surgical period.
