ReviewSclerosing Mesenteritis: A Concise Clinical Review for Clinicians.
Sclerosing mesenteritis (SM), an idiopathic nonneoplastic condition affecting 0.18% to 3.14% of the population, is characterized by chronic fat necrosis, inflammation, and fibrosis most commonly of the mesentery of the small intestine. Sclerosing mesenteritis typically presents in the fifth or sixth decade of life, where patients with a history of abdominal surgery and/or autoimmune disease may be at higher risk. While many patients are asymptomatic, clinical features and complications are related to the mass effect resulting from the inflammation and fibrosis involved in the pathogenesis of SM. ⋯ For patients with pronounced symptoms or complicated SM, the combination of tamoxifen 10 mg twice daily and prednisone 40 mg daily is the first-line pharmacotherapy; no randomized controlled trial of this regimen has been performed. Rarely, surgery may be necessary in cases of persistent bowel obstruction refractory to medical management. Sclerosing mesenteritis has an overall benign course in most cases, but disease progression and fatal outcomes have been reported.

Emulated Trial for Discharge Prescription of Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy and 15-Year Survival After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery.
To explore admission and discharge prescription rates of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT), defined as aggregate antiplatelet agents, statins, and β-blockers, after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and to reveal its association with long-term survival. ⋯ The use of aggregate GDMT before surgery conferred a greater likelihood of GDMT prescription upon discharge, which, in turn, is associated with better long-term survival. Educational efforts of pertinent medical professionals are needed to minimize preventive treatment gaps.

Weight Loss Surgery Increases Kidney Transplant Rates in Patients With Renal Failure and Obesity.
To describe the outcomes of kidney transplant (KT) candidates with obesity undergoing sleeve gastrectomy (SG) to meet the criteria for KT. ⋯ In KT candidates with obesity, SG appears to be effective, with 37% of patients undergoing KT during the next 18 months (P<.01). Further research is needed to confirm and to improve the safety and efficacy of SG for patients with obesity seeking a KT.

Art is integrated into the Mayo Clinic environment. Since the original Mayo Clinic Building was finished in 1914, many pieces have been donated or commissioned for patients and staff to enjoy. Each issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings features a work of art (as interpreted by the author) that is displayed in a building or on the grounds of Mayo Clinic campuses.
