The present prospective survey was performed to obtain information on delayed adverse reactions (DARs) to five types of low-osmolar iodinated contrast media, including their frequency, common manifestations, and the patient's history of allergy. ⋯ Four risk factors for DARs were identified in the present investigation.

A real-time interactive MR imaging system (real-time MRI) is an MR scanner which has a fast image updating cycle and the ability to freely change slice orientation, just like an ultrasound imaging system. Recently, such a system has been developed and installed on a clinical 1.5-Tesla system. The purpose of this study was to optimize the pulse sequences for clinical use and to evaluate the clinical usefulness and basic functionality of real-time MRI. ⋯ Maximum C/N between cardiac cavity and wall was obtained at a flip angle of 60 degrees on true FISP. Localization of the right and left coronary arteries could be performed within 30 seconds in three volunteers. Although the present real-time MRI system has drawbacks such as low spatial resolution and relatively low contrast resolution, we expect real-time MRI to be one of the most important tools for future clinical MRI.

To investigate the correlation between late rectal complications and rectal dose in uterine cervix cancer patients treated with high dose rate intracavitary radiotherapy (HDR ICR) and to analyze dose factors reducing complications. ⋯ This study showed that in vivo dosimetry using TLD during HDR ICR could have a useful role as a predictor of late rectal complications. Dose limitation to the rectum could possibly be achieved by thorough vaginal packing or use of an applicator with proper shielding while maintaining a high dose to the tumor.

The reproducibility of short echo time proton MR spectroscopy (1H-MRS) in normal human brains was examined. Thirteen healthy volunteers were studied, and each underwent three MRS examinations. Second and third measurements were done on the same day, about two months after the first measurement, and interday and intraday reproducibility were evaluated. ⋯ Their normal range and reproducibility were measured. For each metabolite ratio, there was no significant difference between interday difference and intraday difference, suggesting that the interval of two months has minimal effect on MRS measurements. MRS may be utilized for the observation of central nervous system diseases.

A total of 74 patients with intussusception were divided into two groups: 43 cases in 39 patients between April 1974 and June 1988 were treated under general anesthesia, and 39 cases in 35 patients between July 1988 and January 1994 were treated without it. We compared the success rates of barium reduction of intussusception in the two groups and used Fisher's exact probability test to assess whether they differed significantly. ⋯ The use of general anesthesia for hydrostatic barium reduction of intussusception did not improve the success rate of this procedure. Therefore we recommend that, in view of its associated disadvantages, general anesthesia should not be used during this procedure.
