Psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale for acute low back pain.
Measurement instruments of pain catastrophizing for middle-aged and elderly individuals are needed to understand its impact on low back pain. The goals were to cross-culturally adapt the Pain Catastrophizing Scale, assess the construct validity through Rasch analysis, and verify reliability and convergent validity of pain catastrophizing with psychosocial factors. 131 individuals aged 55 years and older with acute low back pain were interviewed. The intra-rater reliability was Kp = 0.80 and interrater Kp = 0.75. ⋯ The pain catastrophizing correlated with most psychosocial factors. The instrument proved to be clinically useful. Subsequent studies should carry out the same analysis in different populations.

The Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM III) specifically assesses individuals with spinal cord injuries. ⋯ The Brazilian version of the SCIM III is easy to understand, has good psychometric properties, and is valid.

Pain centers professionals' beliefs on non-cancer chronic pain.
The beliefs and attitudes of health professionals affect the care ultimately provided to patients. The objective of this study was to analyze health professionals' beliefs toward chronic no cancer pain in nine (82%) pain centers in the city of S. Paulo. ⋯ The professionals professed a belief in a medical cure for chronic pain, that solicitous displays were desirable behaviors in treating pain, that chronic pain is related to injury and that it is the cause of disability, all of which are erroneous beliefs. Contrary to the expected result, the health professionals with more experience and education did not express more appropriate beliefs. These beliefs may compromise the treatment of patients with chronic pain and should therefore be reviewed.

Analysis of the best therapeutic alternative for intracranial dural arteriovenous malformations.
The material for this research consisted of 93 patients with dural arteriovenous malformations (DAVMs) who were studied retrospectively with regards to therapeutic success and failure, who had undergone either neurosurgery, or embolization or a combination of both methods and whose disease was located in the cavernous sinus, the superior sagittal sinus, the transverse-sigmoid sinus of the anterior fossa and the tentorium. Thus, it was possible to arrive at the following conclusions: treatment of the DAVMs must be indicated, jointly, by an interventionist neuroradiologist and a neurosurgeon; DAVMs of the transverse-sigmoid sinus were better treated when a combination of both methods was used; DAVMs of the tentorium were also better treated with a combined method; the endovascular method ensured only a 50% chance of therapeutic success for DAVMs of the superior sagittal sinus; DAVMs of the cavernous sinus are better treated when the endovascular method was used with a transvenous approach, relative to the transarterial approach.

[Clinical evaluation of the efficacy of the paracetamol and caffeine combination in the treatment of tension headache].
Tension type headache in both its forms, episodic and chronic, is the most common type of headache experienced by the population. The headache attack or the prevention of new crises may be treated with pharmacological as well as non-pharmacological measures. This study included 5,490 patients from out-patient clinics and medical offices covering various regions of Brazil. ⋯ Good/excellent efficacy ratings were achieved in 61.93%/37.80% of the cases according to the physician's assessment and in 48.51%/40.29% according to the patients' assessment. Adverse events, commonly gastrointestinal manifestations, were reported by 5.57% of the patients. This is a Brazilian study of the efficacy and safety of the combined use of acetaminophen-caffeine for the treatment of tension type headache.
