Accurate assessment of functional capacity, a predictor of postoperative morbidity and mortality, is essential to improving surgical planning and outcomes. We assessed if all 12 items of the Duke Activity Status Index (DASI) were equally important in reflecting exercise capacity. ⋯ The M-DASI provides a simple screening tool for further preoperative evaluation, including with cardiopulmonary exercise testing, to guide perioperative management.

The Adaptation of Pediatric Exercise Testing Programs to the Coronavirus/COVID-19 Pandemic.
Response to the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in several initiatives that directly impact hospital operations. There has been minimal information on how COVID-19 has affected exercise testing in pediatric patients. ⋯ Pediatric exercise testing laboratories largely closed during the early pandemic, with many of these programs either now open or working on a plan to open. Despite this, there remains heterogeneity in how to minimize exposure risks to patients and staff. Standardization of exercise testing guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic may help reduce some of these differences.

The aim of this study was to determine the association between Mediterranean diet adherence, physical activity (PA) patterns (i.e., screen time and PA after school), and weight status with the cardiovascular response following a cardiorespiratory fitness test. ⋯ School children with obesity showed a higher cardiovascular response in HR and SBP than normal weight and overweight peers. Moreover, the increment of the SBP presented inverse association with food habits and PA patterns.

Physiological Responses to the 6-min Step Test in Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
To describe physiological responses during the 6-min step test (6MST) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), to investigate whether COPD severity and test interruptions could determine different physiological responses, and to test the reproducibility of 6MST performance. ⋯ The 6MST showed a stabilization of the most physiological variables. In addition, interruptions were usually made by patients with a greater impairment of lung function and they presented greater increased ventilatory demand during the 6MST. However, these interruptions do not interfere with 6MST physiological responses. Moreover, the 6MST is a reliable test to evaluate the functional capacity of patients with COPD.

The purpose of the current study was to examine if isometric peak force and rate of force development (RFD) were related to the ability to successfully perform a simulated casualty evacuation task in both unweighted and weighted conditions. ⋯ Isometric deadlift peak force represents an important determinant for the success of a simulated casualty evacuation task and may be a useful marker to include in periodic fitness evaluations of military personnel.
