Despite mixed results regarding the clinical utility of checklists, the anesthesia community is increasingly interested in advancing research around this important topic. Although several checklists have been developed to address routine perioperative care, few checklists in the anesthesia literature specifically target the management of trauma patients. We adapted a recently published "trauma and emergency checklist" for the initial phase of resuscitation and anesthesia of critically ill trauma patients into an applicable perioperative cognitive aid in the form of a pictogram that can be downloaded by the medical community. ⋯ A brief online survey is also presented to obtain feedback for improvement of this tool. The variability in utility of cognitive aids may be because of the specific clinical task being performed, the skill level of the individuals using the cognitive aid, overall quality of the cognitive aid, or organizational challenges. Once optimized, future research should be focused at ensuring successful implementation and customization of this tool.

Effect of Compliance With a Nurse-Led Intensive Care Unit Checklist on Clinical Outcomes in Mechanically and Nonmechanically Ventilated Patients.
Use of checklists brings about improvements in a variety of patient outcomes. Nevertheless, whether compliance with a nurse-led intensive care unit (ICU) checklist produces the same effect is currently unknown. ⋯ Compliance with completion of a nurse-led ICU checklist was associated with prolonged ICU stay, hospital stay, and ventilator stay.

Background Ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous line (USGPIV) placement is becoming an important tool in current clinical practice. Many residency programs utilize unstructured clinical observation to evaluate residents in this and other procedural skills. Simulation-based assessment permits educators to make objective, standardized observations, and may be ideal for assessment of important procedural competencies. ⋯ Agreement between independent raters on first-attempt USGPIV placement score was determined by weighted kappa statistics to be 0.93 (95% CI 086-1.00). Conclusions The checklist assessment tool has acceptable interrater reliability and ability to distinguish performance at differing levels of competence. We propose this tool as a valuable component in the assessment of USGPIV access, and we hope this article serves as a roadmap for other educators to create similar assessment tools.

Implementation and evaluation of a checklist to improve patient care on surgical ward rounds.
Key aspects of care may be overlooked on a busy surgical ward round. This study assessed the use of a checklist to correct these omissions. Its use as the basis of structured ward round documentation was then measured. ⋯ The use of a checklist during surgical ward rounds makes significant improvement in the consideration of most key aspects of care and education in the completion of a structured progress form substantially improved documentation.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) surgical checklist acts as a safety check before surgery. The three components are: sign in, surgical pause and sign out. This study aims to assess and improve the surgical pause at a tertiary paediatric surgical unit. ⋯ This study shows that by engaging with theatre staff to create an acceptable checklist poster, better standard of patient safety in the operating theatre can be achieved.
