The objective of this study was to assess the influence of a teaching plan consisting of didactic teaching and repeated simulations on the performance of anesthesia residents in the management of general anesthesia (GA) for emergency Cesarean delivery (CD). ⋯ Didactic teaching followed by simulation sessions enhances not only the technical skills but also the non-technical skills of residents, most likely due to the feedback received after the first simulation session. Repeated simulation sessions may help prepare residents to deal more effectively with similar critical situations in clinical practice with minimum errors.

Development of the gastrointestinal endoscopy competency assessment tool for pediatric colonoscopy (GiECAT KIDS).
Many aspects of pediatric colonoscopy differ from adult practice. To date, there is no validated measure of endoscopic competence for use in pediatrics. Using Delphi methodology, we aimed to determine expert consensus regarding items required on a checklist and global rating scale designed to assess the competence of clinicians performing colonoscopy on pediatric patients. ⋯ Delphi methodology allowed for achievement of expert consensus regarding essential items to be included in the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Competency Assessment Tool for Pediatric Colonoscopy (GiECATKIDS), a measure of endoscopic competence specific to performing pediatric colonoscopy. Key differences in the checklist items, compared with items reaching consensus during a separate adult Delphi process using the same indicators, emphasize the need for a pediatric-specific tool.

[OR management - Checklists for OR-design for OR-managers - results of a workshop].
The construction of an operating room (OR) suite represents an important intermediate- and long term investment. The planning process starts with the quantitative estimation of the procedures to be carried out which defines the operative capacity for the life time of the facility. This permits the calculation of the number of ORs and the definition of the resources for the recovery room, the intermediate care and intensive care unit. ⋯ Dedicated locations for a simultaneous preparation of the instrumentation tables permit parallel processing. Thus an adequate capacity of preparation rooms and storage rooms is necessary. Dressing rooms, rest rooms, showers and lounges are important for the working conditions and should be planned in an adequate size and number.

Deficiencies in daily ward rounds are increasingly identified. A ward safety checklist has recently been devised to improve the fast-paced surgical ward round. ⋯ Implementing this simple checklist has provided our unit with a starting point in how to overcome some of the deficiencies of the post-take surgical ward round.

ReviewDevelopment of a standard operating procedure and checklist for rapid sequence induction in the critically ill.
Rapid sequence induction (RSI) of critically ill patients outside of theatres is associated with a higher risk of hypoxia, cardiovascular collapse and death. In the prehospital and military environments, there is an increasing awareness of the benefits of standardised practice and checklists. ⋯ Based on the presented literature, we believe the evidence is sufficient to recommend adoption of the core components in the suggested SOP. This standardised approach to RSI in the critically ill may reduce the current high incidence of adverse events and hopefully improve patient outcomes.
