Development and validation of the "FrOCK": Frankfurt observer communication checklist.
Appropriate communication behaviour during medical consultations has been shown to improve doctor-patient relationships, and should therefore be an integral part of medical training. In Germany, though, there are almost no reliable and validated checklists for assessing communication skills during medical examinations. Our aim was to develop and validate the first German checklist to examine communication skills that can be used during examinations: the Frankfurt Observer Communication Checklist (FrOCK). ⋯ The results of this study have shown that FrOCK is a clear and concise checklist for assessing communication skills in medical examinations and one that satisfies psychometric requirements as well. It takes only 3 to 5minutes to complete and thus is particularly useful for assessing communication skills in medical examinations.

Reporting Recommendations for Tumor Marker Prognostic Studies (REMARK): explanation and elaboration.
The REMARK (Reporting Recommendations for Tumor Marker Prognostic Studies) guideline includes a checklist which aims to improve the reporting of these types of studies. Here, we expand on the REMARK checklist to enhance its use and effectiveness through better understanding of the intent of each item and why the information is important to report. Each checklist item of the REMARK guideline is explained in detail and accompanied by published examples of good reporting. The paper provides a comprehensive overview to educate on good reporting and provide a valuable reference of issues to consider when designing, conducting, and analyzing tumor marker studies and prognostic studies in medicine in general.

To evaluate the effect of implementation of the WHO's Surgical Safety Checklist on mortality and to determine to what extent the potential effect was related to checklist compliance. ⋯ Implementation of the WHO Surgical Checklist reduced in-hospital 30-day mortality. Although the impact on outcome was smaller than previously reported, the effect depended crucially upon checklist compliance.

Comparative StudyInterdisciplinary development and implementation of communication checklist for postoperative management of pediatric airway patients.
The authors describe their multidisciplinary experience in applying the Institute of Health Improvement methodology to develop a protocol and checklist to reduce communication error during transfer of care for postoperative pediatric surgical airway patients. Preliminary outcome data following implementation of the protocol and checklist are also presented. ⋯ There has been very little written in the quality and safety patient literature about coordinating effective transfer of care between the pediatric surgical and medical subspecialty realms. After design and implementation of a simple, electronically based transfer-of-care checklist and protocol, the number of postsurgical pediatric airway information transfer and communication errors decreased significantly.
