The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends routine use of a surgical safety checklist prior to all surgical operations. The aim of this study was to prospectively audit checklist use in orthopaedic patients before and after implementation of an educational programme designed to increase use and correlate this with early complications, mortality and staff perceptions. Data was collected on 480 patients before the educational program and 485 patients after. ⋯ Seventy-seven percent thought the checklist improved team communication. Checklist use was not associated with a significant reduction in early complications and mortality in patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery. Education programs can significantly increase accurate use and staff perceptions following implementation.

Multicenter StudyEvaluation of a preoperative team briefing: a new communication routine results in improved clinical practice.
BACKGROUND Suboptimal communication within healthcare teams can lead to adverse patient outcomes. Team briefings were previously associated with improved communication patterns, and we assessed the impact of briefings on clinical practice. To quantify the impact of the preoperative team briefing on direct patient care, we studied the timing of preoperative antibiotic administration as compared to accepted treatment guidelines. ⋯ In cases where the timing of antibiotics administration was documented unambiguously in the chart (n=259 pre-intervention and n=283 post-intervention), antibiotic prophylaxis was on time for 77.6% of cases in the pre-intervention phase of the study, and for 87.6% of cases in the post-intervention phase (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS Use of a preoperative team checklist briefing was associated with improved physician compliance with antibiotic administration guidelines. Based on the results, recommendations to enhance timely antibiotic therapy are provided.

[Check-list "Patient Safety" in the operating room: one year experience of 40,000 surgical procedures at the university hospital of Nice].
The implementation of the check-list "Safe surgery saves live" (CL) has proven effective to reduce morbidity and perioperative mortality. Since 1st January 2010 it is a requirement of the HAS as part of the process of certification of hospitals. The CL has been established on all the operating rooms of our hospital after the onset of a near accident. ⋯ The CL is involved in developing a safety culture in the operating room and led to the establishment of a risk mapping in the operating room and the recovery room and participation in the program error prevention procedure and surgical site through international program "High 5s" whose purpose is to improve the safety of care.

[Deployment of the checklist "Patient safety in the operating room" in two Lorraine hospitals. Performances and difficulties].
To evaluate the implementation of the checklist HAS 2010 in two Lorraine health facilities to identify objectively brakes and levers to suggest possible improvements. ⋯ Good adhesion to the concept, hope for better results after stock enhancement: optimize information and training of all professionals, avoid duplication with other documents. The audit record alone is not a good tool for evaluating the use of LBC, we must associate a self-administered questionnaire.

[French surgical checklist in a universitary hospital: achievements one year after implementation].
Implementation of the checklist "Safe surgery saves live" (CL) is associated with reduction of perioperative morbidity and mortality. In France, CL is mandatory in operating rooms (OR) since January 2010. The objective of this work was to evaluate the level of the roll out of the CL in our institution, a French universitary hospital. ⋯ CL evaluation restricted to levels of use is limited and should be extended to a qualitative evaluation. Communication in the OR remains insufficient and represents an important quality improvement aim to improve security in the OR.
