Medical and nursing students organized a contextual interprofessional learning experience involving observation of surgical safety practices according to the parameters of the World Health Organization (WHO) surgical safety checklist. Students were oriented to patient safety principles, operating room (OR) protocol, and the WHO surgical safety checklist. ⋯ Focus group data collected provides a foundation on which future research can build. Areas of inquiry may include development of teamwork within the context of interprofessional education, examination of the role of students in developing their own curricula, and randomized comparisons of clinical-based and classroom-based approaches to surgical safety education.

To assess the level of implementation and the factors associated with the compliance to the surgical check list (SCL) proposed by the WHO, in surgery departments in public hospitals in the Murcia Region of Spain. ⋯ The SCL is used, but is not always complied with, and not homogeneously in all its sections. There is also significant variation between the public hospitals in the Murcia Region of Spain.

Multicenter StudyEvaluation of a preoperative team briefing: a new communication routine results in improved clinical practice.
BACKGROUND Suboptimal communication within healthcare teams can lead to adverse patient outcomes. Team briefings were previously associated with improved communication patterns, and we assessed the impact of briefings on clinical practice. To quantify the impact of the preoperative team briefing on direct patient care, we studied the timing of preoperative antibiotic administration as compared to accepted treatment guidelines. ⋯ In cases where the timing of antibiotics administration was documented unambiguously in the chart (n=259 pre-intervention and n=283 post-intervention), antibiotic prophylaxis was on time for 77.6% of cases in the pre-intervention phase of the study, and for 87.6% of cases in the post-intervention phase (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS Use of a preoperative team checklist briefing was associated with improved physician compliance with antibiotic administration guidelines. Based on the results, recommendations to enhance timely antibiotic therapy are provided.

Towards better patient safety: WHO Surgical Safety Checklist in otorhinolaryngology.
The World Health Organisation has developed a Surgical Safety Checklist to improve patient safety during surgery. This checklist has reduced postoperative morbidity and mortality. Prior to checklist implementation, we wanted to evaluate how it would fit into the process of otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery and whether it would have an impact on the awareness of safety-related issues. ⋯ Our study confirms that the Surgical Safety Checklist fits well into the surgical working process in otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery improving the sharing of patient-related medical information between team members. Development of a specific checklist for otolaryngology calls for further study.
