Randomized Controlled Trial
Comparison of the analgesic efficacy between arthroscopically placed continuous suprascapular nerve block and ultrasound-guided continuous superior trunk block: a double-blinded randomized controlled trial.
Single-shot suprascapular nerve block and superior trunk block have been reported to provide a noninferior analgesic effect after shoulder surgery with a lesser incidence of hemidiaphragmatic paresis compared with interscalene brachial plexus block. This study hypothesized that continuous suprascapular nerve block provides noninferior analgesia with minimal effects on diaphragmatic movement compared with continuous superior trunk block in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery. ⋯ Continuous suprascapular nerve block provides statistically inferior analgesia compared to the continuous superior trunk block; however, the continuous suprascapular nerve block had a minimal effect on the phrenic nerve function.

Accidental or surgically induced thoracic trauma is responsible for significant pain that can impact patient outcomes. One of the main objectives of its pain management is to promote effective coughing and early mobilization to reduce atelectasis and ventilation disorders induced by pulmonary contusion. ⋯ In this narrative review, we propose to detail systemic and regional analgesia techniques to minimize postoperative pain, while reducing transitional pain, surgical stress response and opioid side effects. We provide the reader with practical recommendations based on both literature and clinical practice experience in a referral level III thoracic trauma center.

Randomized Controlled TrialHigher intra-operative narcotic requirements and weakness with quadratus lumborum compared to paravertebral nerve block for total hip arthroplasty.
This was a prospective single-blinded study comparing the peri-operative opioid consumption and motor weakness for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) with either a Quadratus Lumborum Type 3 Nerve Block (QLB) or a Paravertebral Nerve Block (PVB). ⋯ III, Non-randomized controlled cohort/follow-up study.

Randomized Controlled TrialRebound pain after interscalene brachial plexus block for shoulder surgery: a randomized clinical trial of the effect of different multimodal analgesia regimens.
Rebound pain is characterized by sudden, significant acute postoperative pain occurring after the resolution of inter-scalene block (ISB); it affects the quality of recovery postoperatively. Dexamethasone increases ISB resolution time and decreases opioid consumption and the incidence of rebound pain. ⋯ Single-center study.

The association between epidural labor analgesia and the fetal outcome and mode of delivery of the second twin: a nationwide register-based cohort study in Finland.
The aim of this study was to assess the association between epidural labor analgesia and the mode of delivery for the second twin and to analyze the health outcomes of the second twin. ⋯ This study found epidural labor analgesia was associated with a lower rate of emergency cesarean delivery and neonatal mortality for the second twin. These results should be acknowledged by obstetricians and anesthesiologists when planning optimal peripartum management for mothers with twin pregnancies.
