In 2010, the Office of the US Army Surgeon General recommended the Veterans Administration (VA) assess pain using the Defense and Veterans Pain Rating Scale (DVPRS). One item in the DVPRS is for measuring pain intensity. This item contains a combination of five response metrics: categories, faces, colors, numbers, and functional descriptors. A few studies have supported patients' and health care providers' preferences for the DVPRS and its psychometric properties. However, they also left uncertainties about its usability and validity. ⋯ Results from this study inform the nursing community about the DVPRS' pain intensity item, which combines multiple response metrics. The results support the need for nursing units to generate and standardize procedures for using the item to measure multi-site pain and for interpreting and documenting patients' non-numeric responses. The effects of such procedures on the measure's usability and psychometric properties warrants additional investigation.

Multisensory sensitivity (MSS), observed in some chronic pain patients, may reflect a generalized central nervous system sensitivity. While several surveys measure aspects of MSS, there remains no gold standard. We explored the underlying constructs of 4 MSS-related surveys (80 items in total) using factor analyses using REDCap surveys (N = 614, 58.7% with pain). ⋯ The MSAS provides a psychometrically comprehensive, brief, and promising tool for measuring the core-dimensions of MSS. PERSPECTIVE: Multiple multisensory sensitivity (MSS) tools are used, but without exploration of their underlying domains. We found several measures lacking core MSS domains, thus we modified an existing scale to encompass 5 core MSS domains: light, smell, sound, tactile, and internal bodily sensations using only 12 items, with good psychometric properties.

Comparative StudyComparing the Quality of Life After Brain Injury-Overall Scale (QOLIBRI-OS) and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) as Outcome Measures for Traumatic Brain Injury Research.
It is important to measure quality of life (QoL) after traumatic brain injury (TBI), yet limited studies have compared QoL inventories. In 2579 TBI patients, orthopedic trauma controls, and healthy friend control participants, we compared the Quality of Life After Brain Injury-Overall Scale (QOLIBRI-OS), developed for TBI patients, to the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), an index of generic life satisfaction. We tested the hypothesis that group differences (TBI and orthopedic trauma vs. healthy friend controls) would be larger for the QOLIBRI-OS than the SWLS and that the QOLIBRI-OS would manifest more substantial changes over time in the injured groups, demonstrating more relevance of the QOLIBRI-OS to traumatic injury recovery. (1) We compared the group differences (TBI vs. orthopedic trauma control vs. friend control) in QoL as indexed by the SWLS versus the QOLIBRI-OS and (2) characterized changes across time in these two inventories across 1 year in these three groups. ⋯ The QOLIBRI-OS better captured expected improvements in QoL during the injury recovery course in injured groups than the SWLS, which demonstrated smaller changes over time. TBI severity was not consistently or robustly associated with self-reported QoL. The findings imply that, as compared with the SWLS, the QOLIBRI-OS appears to identify QoL issues more specifically relevant to traumatically injured patients and may be a more appropriate primary QoL outcome measure for research focused on the sequelae of traumatic injuries.

Functional Status Examination Yields Higher Measurement Precision than the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended After Moderate-to-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.
A limited evidence base supports the Functional Status Examination (FSE) as superior to the more commonly used Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended (GOSE) for precisely characterizing injury-related functional limitations. The aim of this study was to use modern psychometric tools to test the hypothesis that the FSE is more precise than the GOSE in characterizing individual differences in functional limitations after moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Secondarily, we sought to confirm that the type of interviewee (patient, significant other) does not affect the test performance of the FSE. ⋯ The GOSE yielded more information than the FSE at a very high level of disability, because of the GOSE's assignment of a unique score for individuals who are in a vegetative state. Finally, the FSE showed no evidence of differential item functioning by interviewee, indicating it is appropriate to interview either persons with TBI or significant others and combine data across respondents as is typically done. The findings support the FSE as a viable and oftentimes advantageous substitute for the GOSE in clinical trials and translational studies of TBI.

The Bath Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Body Perception Disturbance Scale ("B-CRPS-BPDS") measures alterations in body perception. We assessed its internal consistency, known group validity, construct validity, and associations with demographic and clinical characteristics. We also evaluated changes in, and baseline predictors of B-CRPS-BPDS scores at follow-up. ⋯ Our results demonstrate the utility of the r-B-CRPS-BPDS for measuring body perception disturbances in CRPS. PERSPECTIVE: This article evaluates the validity of the Bath Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Body Perception Disturbance Scale ("B-CRPS-BPDS") in CRPS, and assesses relationships with demographic and clinical variables. The proposed revised B-CRPS-BPDS appears to be a valid measure of body perception disturbances in CRPS.
