Background: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare disease characterized by increased bone fragility and susceptibility for fractures. Only few studies have compared the management for femoral fractures in children with OI. Nevertheless, no cohort studies have described the treatment for femoral fractures in adults with OI in Taiwan. ⋯ The best outcomes for non-union shaft fracture is achieved by surgical treatment. Conclusion: Adults with OI tended to develop femoral fractures and non-unions. Adults with type 4 OI were particularly at high risk for non-unions in shaft fractures with conservative treatment.

Background and purpose - Knee fracture treatment burden remains unknown, impeding proper use of hospital resources. We examined 20-year trends in incidence rates (IRs) and patient-, fracture-, and treatment-related characteristics of knee fracture patients. Patients and methods - This nationwide cohort study of prospectively collected data including patients with distal femoral, patellar, and proximal tibial fractures from the Danish National Patient Registry during 1998-2017, assesses IRs of knee fractures (per 105 inhabitants) as well as patient-, fracture-, and treatment-related characteristics of knee fracture patients. ⋯ Knee fracture IR increased 12% to 70, females aged > 51 had the highest knee fracture IR, proximal tibial fracture had the highest knee fracture type IR (32) and surgically treated knee fracture IR increased 35% to 23. Interpretation - Knee fracture IRs, especially of surgically treated knee fractures, are increasing and proximal tibial fracture has the highest knee fracture type IR. Females aged > 51 and patients with comorbidity are associated with knee fracture, proximal tibial fracture, proximal tibial fracture surgery, and posttraumatic knee arthroplasty.

Incidence and treatment of femur fractures in adults with osteogenesis imperfecta: an analysis of an expert clinic of 216 patients.
Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is characterized by increased bone fragility and susceptibility for fractures. A few studies described and compared treatment modalities for femur fractures in children with OI. However, no cohort studies on adults with OI have been published. This study on adult OI patients aims to give insight into the incidence of femur fractures and non-unions and its best treatment options to avert non-union. ⋯ OI adults were prone to developing femur fractures and non-unions. Especially type 4 OI adults, with conservatively treated shaft fractures, were at high risk for non-unions.

Road traffic injuries disproportionately affect low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and are associated with femur fractures that lead to long-term disability. Information about these injuries is crucial for appropriate healthcare resource allocation. The purpose of this study is to estimate the incidence of femoral shaft fractures in Tanzania and describe the unmet surgical burden. ⋯ The incidence rate is similar to previous estimations, and it is consistent with an increased femoral shaft fracture incidence in Tanzania when compared to higher income countries. The femur fracture:RTI ratio may be a valid tool for estimating femur fracture incidence rates. There is an unmet orthopaedic surgical burden for femur fractures treatment at rural hospitals in Tanzania, and the barriers to treatment could be targets for future interventions.

The risk of bone fracture after long-term risperidone exposure is not increased compared to other atypical antipsychotics: A retrospective cohort study.
Antipsychotic agents can increase circulating serum prolactin levels, potentially leading to osteoporosis and increased risk of bone fracture. The risk appears to be lower for atypical antipsychotics. We investigated whether risperidone was associated with an increased fracture risk by estimating the incidence of hip/femur and non-hip/femur fractures in users of risperidone, other atypical, and typical antipsychotics. ⋯ There was no increased risk of bone fracture in long-term users of risperidone compared to users of other atypical antipsychotics.
