Carotid atherosclerotic plaques are the manifestation of atherosclerosis in the carotid arteries and can significantly increase the incidence of cerebrovascular disease. Macrophages and smooth muscle cells are crucial for their development. ⋯ The macrophages and smooth muscle cells in the patients with symptomatic carotid atherosclerotic plaques caused intraplaque cell death via the mitochondrial autophagic pathway, resulting in plaque instability and rupture, which in turn led to clinical cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. The findings provide new insights into carotid atherosclerosis formation, and this may provide new directions for the prevention and treatment of carotid atherosclerosis.

Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, insomnia has become one of the longer COVID-19 symptoms. This study aimed to investigate insomnia among COVID-19 survivors and explore the occurrence and influencing factors of insomnia. A cross-sectional study was performed from December 2022 to February 2023 through an online questionnaire star survey with 8 questions. ⋯ The prevalence of insomnia symptoms remains high among COVID-19 survivors in China. Education level and occupation may be the influencing factors. Unfortunately, most patients with insomnia do not take corresponding treatment measures.

Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is one of the most common and severe occupational diseases worldwide. The main risk factor of CWP is exposure to respirable mine dust. Prediction theory was widely applied in the prediction of the epidemic. ⋯ We choose a better prediction model by comparing the prediction effect of the Auto Regression Integrate Moving Average model and Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity model. Compared with the Auto Regression Integrate Moving Average model, the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity model has a better prediction effect. Furthermore, the status quo and future trend of coal miners' CWP are still at a high level.

Characteristics of patients with chronic hepatitis B infection in China: A retrospective claims database study.
Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection affects approximately 90 million people in China, where there are profoundly unmet clinical and public health needs. This study evaluated patient demographics, disease progression, and treatment management using national administrative claims data. This retrospective, observational study used anonymized data from the China Health Insurance Research Association claims database (January 1-December 31, 2016); data that could not be validated, or from duplicate entries, were excluded. ⋯ The most frequently visited hospitals were Tier III; patients visiting Tier III generally required more hospital care compared with those visiting Tier I/II hospitals. Only two-thirds of patients were prescribed antiviral therapy for CHB (most commonly nucleos(t)ide analogues). Results from this study highlight a substantial need to improve access to appropriate CHB treatment in China.

Wolman's disease, a severe form of lysosomal acid lipase deficiency, leads to pathologic lipid accumulation in the liver and gut that, without treatment, is fatal in infancy. Although continued enzyme-replacement therapy (ERT) in combination with dietary fat restriction prolongs life, its therapeutic effect may wane over time. ⋯ Here we describe an infant with Wolman's disease who received high-dose ERT, together with dietary fat restriction and rituximab-based B-cell depletion, as a bridge to early HSCT. At 32 months, the infant was independent of ERT and disease-free, with 100% donor chimerism in the peripheral blood.
