Alzheimer disease (AD) is a major disease that affects the elderly worldwide. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationship between AD and sleep disorders, identify journal publications and collaborators, and analyze keywords and research trends using a bibliometric method. ⋯ This was the first study to provide an overview, about the current main status of development, hot spots of the study, and the future trends in sleep disorders and AD, which provides a comprehensive review of the trends and gaps in field of sleep and AD, and thus lays the groundwork for future research.

Depression, a prevalent psychiatric malady, afflicts a substantial global demographic, engendering considerable disease burden due to its elevated morbidity and mortality rates. Contemporary therapeutic approaches for depression encompass the administration of serotonin reuptake inhibitors, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and tricyclic antidepressants, albeit these pharmaceuticals potentially induce adverse neurological and gastrointestinal effects. ⋯ Additionally, we deliberated the antidepressant mechanisms of natural medicines comprising alkaloids, flavonoids, polyphenols, saponins, and quinones via diverse pathways. This research endeavor endeavored to encapsulate and synthesize the progression of TCMs in modulating HPA axis-associated signaling pathways to mitigate depression, thereby furnishing robust evidence for ensuing research in this domain.

The presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) in wastewater has been proposed as a sentinel surveillance epidemiological tool for detection of infectious disease at a community level and as a complementary approach to syndromic surveillance of infectious disease outbreaks. We have designed a study to test the presence and quantity of SARS-CoV2, the virus responsible for COVID19, in the wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) of the U.S. Air Force Academy. ⋯ Together with ongoing syndromic surveillance data, this proof-of-concept study seeks to determine whether early detection of SARS-CoV2 in a closed system WWTF correlates to changes in community and clinically reported COVID19. The well-documented population served by the geographically discrete WWTF at the U.S. Air Force Academy may serve to better elucidate the adjunctive role of wastewater testing in a comprehensive surveillance system. These results may be of particular interest to the DoD and local commanders given the WWTFs under their immediate control and the information that these studies may provide in support of operational readiness through early detection of disease outbreaks.

The scoring systems commonly used to assess endoscopic disease severity of ulcerative colitis (UC) in clinical research and practice include the Mayo endoscopic score (MES), ulcerative colitis endoscopic severity index (UCEIS), and degree of ulcerative colitis burden of luminal inflammation (DUBLIN). We aimed to assess and compare the predictive efficacy of the MES, DUBLIN score and UCEIS score for prognosis in UC patients treated with vedolizumab (VDZ). Seventy-four UC patients who treated with VDZ from September 2021 to February 2023 were retrospectively enrolled. ⋯ Importantly, the post-therapeutic UCEIS score showed the best predictive capability with an area under curve of 0.871 (95% confidence interval: 0.767-0.976), specificity of 0.654, sensitivity of 0.900, and cutoff value of 3.5. A UCEIS score of ≥ 4 after treatment was correlated with surgical operation or treatment escalation. The UCEIS score is superior to the MES and DUBLIN score in reflecting short-term outcomes and long-term prognosis in UC patients treated with VDZ, and clinical remission could be defined as a UCEIS score ≤ 3.

The U. S. military invests substantial resources to vaccinate all personnel, including recruits, against operationally important infectious disease threats. However, research suggests that vaccine immune response and, therefore, vaccine effectiveness may be inadvertently reduced because of chronic and/or acute sleep deficiency experienced by recipients around the time of vaccination. ⋯ Specifically, research should be aimed at understanding the effects of sleep deficiency, as well as vaccine administration schedules, on response to vaccination and clinical protection. Furthermore, knowledge gaps among military medical leadership on sleep, vaccines, and immune health should be assessed. This area of research may benefit the health and readiness of service members while also decreasing health care utilization and associated costs from illness.
