The role of vitamin D (VD) in the etiopathogenesis of autoimmune diseases (AI) is extensively studied. However, its association with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) is still controversial. AIM of this study was to assess the relationship between the vitamin D status and thyroid autoimmunity in Slovak premenopausal women with newly diagnosed AITD. ⋯ Authors conclude that VD insufficiency is common in Slovak premenopausal women independently of the presence of AITD. Vitamin D insufficiency is not associated with thyroid autoimmunity in patients with early diagnosis of AITD (Tab. 3, Ref. 31). [Diabetes and cardiovascular health literacy in childhood and adolescence - a 12-year follow-up].
The incidence of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases is increasing worldwide and also in Germany. The aim of the study was to assess the health literacy regarding these diseases in childhood and adolescence. ⋯ Changes in health literacy regarding diabetes and other cardiovascular risk factors among 5th-12th grade students over the past 12 years could not be observed. The assumed self-infliction of type 1 diabetes may be perceived as discrimination by those affected.

To investigate the effect and efficacy of traditional Chinese and western medicine combined with lung rehabilitation training on pulmonary function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) complicated with chronic cor pulmonale. ⋯ Traditional Chinese and western medicine combined with lung rehabilitation training displayed better results on lung function and curative effect than conventional western medicine combined with lung rehabilitation training in patients with COPD complicated with chronic cor pulmonale (Tab. 8, Ref. 43). Text in PDF www.elis.sk Keywords: traditional Chinese and western medicine combined, lung rehabilitation training, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary function, curative effect.

Left Ventricular Mass Index in End-Stage Renal Disease Patients during Hemodialysis and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis.
One of the primary reasons for high mortality in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is cardiovascular disease in patients with renal replacement therapy (RRT). Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) significantly predicts mortality and cardiovascular events. ⋯ The LVH of end-stage renal disease patients with HD treatment is worse than CAPD treatment after a follow-up in one year. Dialysis by periodic hemodialysis and anemia treatment that fails to achieve the goal are risk factors associated with increased progression of LVMI in patients with ESRD.

Cholinergic neurons, a type of neurons found in central nervous system, play a vital role in muscle movement and activities. Cholinergic neurons degeneration is the main pathological symptom of neurodegenerative diseases. Among a variety of stem cells, iPSCs have emerged as a promising candidate for transplantation to improve the repair of neuronal lesion sites. However, the establishment of an appropriate induction method to yield large numbers of cholinergic neurons has yet to be determined. Here, we studied the differentiation potential of iPSCs to generate cholinergic neurons by developing a new optimized differentiation protocol. ⋯ Our investigation represents a highly efficient protocol for iPSCs differentiation toward cholinergic neurons which could be used for further preclinical transplantation studies (Tab. 1, Fig. 5, Ref. 35).
