Individuals' perceptions of back pain may shape what they do in response to manage their pain, for example, self-care, medication and seeking healthcare. Illness perceptions encompass a variety of beliefs such as how long pain is expected to last and whether treatments are perceived to control pain. Whether these beliefs meaningfully cluster and whether these clusters are associated with how people manage their back pain are currently unknown. ⋯ Within a general population setting, we identified four clearly distinct groups of people based on the perceptions they held about their back pain. These groupings seemed to reflect meaningful characterisations as they differed based on the characteristics of their pain (e.g., severity and duration) and, after adjustment for these characteristics, were associated with different ways of managing pain. Interventions which focus on targeting the sets of illness perceptions that people hold may be effective in influencing how individuals manage back pain.

Conservative treatment for chronic coccydynia: a 36-month prospective observational study of 115 patients.
To describe long-term outcomes of conservative treatment for chronic coccydynia. ⋯ In adults with chronic coccydynia receiving conservative treatment, symptoms decrease overtime, but significantly persist at 36 months in more than half of them. For patients with posterior coccyx dislocation, coccygectomy may be considered rapidly.

Retrospective. ⋯ Patient BMI may not affect pain and disability outcomes in patients undergoing a multimodal rehabilitation treatment for chronic LBP. In contrast to BMI, other covariates such as age, treatment sessions, and pre-treatment NPRS and ODI scores may be associated with increased risk for poor treatment outcome. Obese individuals can expect clinical outcomes similar to normal or overweight individuals with multimodal physical rehabilitation for chronic LBP.Level of Evidence: 3.

We evaluated the effect of the total psoas area index (TPAI = total psoas muscle area [cm2]/height squared [m2]) on neurological complications and clinical outcomes after lateral lumbar interbody fusion and identified the appropriate TPAI to achieve a substantial clinical benefit (SCB). ⋯ The TPAI had little effect on the incidence of perioperative neurological complications. However, the TPAI was identified as one of the predictors for achieving an SCB regarding back pain.

RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method (RUAM) applied to chiropractic manipulation for patients with chronic low-back pain (CLBP) and chronic neck pain (CNP). ⋯ Chiropractors in this US sample tend to provide manipulation to very few patients with CLBP or CNP for which it is inappropriate. However, more research is needed to determine which patients with CNP benefit from manipulation.Level of Evidence: 4.
