Multicenter StudyPain management practices in paediatric emergency departments in Australia and New Zealand: a clinical and organizational audit by National Health and Medical Research Council's National Institute of Clinical Studies and Paediatric Research in Emergency Departments International Collaborative.
To audit pain management practices and organization in paediatric ED across Australia and New Zealand. ⋯ We found a notable lack of pain assessment documentation and delays to analgesia. There is a need to improve pain assessment and management, although a majority of paediatric ED surveyed had important organizational and educational structures in place. Issues to explore include use of opioids in migraine and the underuse of femoral nerve blocks.

Child abuse training and knowledge: a national survey of emergency medicine, family medicine, and pediatric residents and program directors.
The objective of this study was to determine the level of knowledge, comfort, and training related to the medical management of child abuse among pediatrics, emergency medicine, and family medicine residents. ⋯ By analyzing the relationship between program characteristics and residents' child abuse knowledge, we found that pediatric programs provide far more training and resources for child abuse education than emergency medicine and family medicine programs. As leaders, pediatricians must establish the importance of this topic in the pediatric education of residents of all specialties.

A paediatric telecardiology service for district hospitals in south-east England: an observational study.
To compare caseloads of new patients assessed by paediatric cardiologists face-to-face or during teleconferences, and assess NHS costs for the alternative referral arrangements. ⋯ Paediatric cardiology centres with small cadres of specialists are under pressure to cope with ever-expanding caseloads of new patients with suspected anomalies. Innovative use of telecardiology alongside conventional outreach services should suitably, and economically, enhance access to these specialists.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyEffect of high-fidelity simulation on Pediatric Advanced Life Support training in pediatric house staff: a randomized trial.
To assess the effect of high-fidelity simulation (SIM) on cognitive performance after a training session involving several mock resuscitations designed to teach and reinforce Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) algorithms. ⋯ The use of high-fidelity simulation in a PALS training session resulted in improved cognitive performance by pediatric house staff. Future studies should address skill and knowledge decays and team dynamics, and clearly defined and reproducible outcome measures should be sought.

Multicenter StudyA multi-institutional high-fidelity simulation "boot camp" orientation and training program for first year pediatric critical care fellows.
Simulation training has been used to integrate didactic knowledge, technical skills, and crisis resource management for effective orientation and patient safety. We hypothesize multi-institutional simulation-based training for first year pediatric critical care (PCC) fellows is feasible and effective. ⋯ The first PCC orientation training integrated with simulation was effective and logistically feasible. The train to success concept with repetitive practice was highly valued by participants. Continuation and expansion of this novel multi-institutional training is planned.
