Patient visits to a national practice-based research network: comparing pediatric research in office settings with the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey.
Our objective with this study was to assess the extent to which patients who are seen by practitioners in Pediatric Research in Office Settings, a national primary care practice-based research network, are representative of those who are seen in ambulatory office-based pediatric primary care in the United States. ⋯ The Pediatric Research in Office Settings patient population is reasonably representative of patients who are seen in US ambulatory office-based pediatric primary care practices; therefore, the Pediatric Research in Office Settings is an appropriate laboratory for studies of care in such settings.

Multicenter StudyThe Pediatric Rheumatology International Trials Organization/American College of Rheumatology provisional criteria for the evaluation of response to therapy in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus: prospective validation of the definition of improvement.
To use the Pediatric Rheumatology International Trials Organization (PRINTO) core set of outcome measures to develop a validated definition of improvement for the evaluation of response to therapy in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). ⋯ PRINTO proposes a valid and reproducible definition of improvement that reflects well the consensus rating of experienced clinicians and that incorporates clinically meaningful change in core set measures in a composite end point for the evaluation of global response to therapy in patients with juvenile SLE. The definition is now proposed for use in juvenile SLE clinical trials and may help physicians to decide whether a child with SLE responded adequately to therapy.

Multicenter StudyPotential medication dosing errors in outpatient pediatrics.
To determine the prevalence of potential dosing errors of medication dispensed to children for 22 common medications. ⋯ Potential medication dosing errors occur frequently in outpatient pediatrics. Studies on the clinical impact of these potential errors and effective error prevention strategies are needed.

A review of emergency equipment carried and procedures performed by UK front line paramedics on paediatric patients.
In 1997 a review of paramedic practice upon adult patients in the UK found many inconsistencies and deficiencies in basic care. A follow up review in 2002 identified widespread improvement in provision of equipment and skills to provide basic and advanced life support.Paediatric care was not assessed in either review. The authors conducted this study to identify current standards of care in paediatric paramedic practice and areas of potential improvement. ⋯ Ambulance Trusts not meeting standards set out in the JRCALC guidelines must address their areas of deficiency. Failure to do so endangers children's lives and leaves Trusts open to criticism.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical TrialThe pediatric residency training on tobacco project: baseline findings from the patient tobacco survey.
Few pediatricians address tobacco in the patients they treat, and pediatric residency training programs are not preparing them to meet the tobacco challenge. The Pediatric Residency Training on Tobacco Project is a 4-year randomized prospective study of the effectiveness of training pediatric residents to intervene on tobacco in patients and parents. In the present report, we present findings from the Baseline Patient Tobacco Survey. ⋯ The findings from the Baseline Patient Tobacco Survey describe the characteristics of the population under study, indicate that the two experimental groups were similar at the start of the program, and underscore the need to prepare pediatric residents to address tobacco.
