The First Postoperative Day: Prospective Evaluation of Pain in Adult Otorhinolaryngologic Surgery.
The aim of the study was to assess postoperative pain within the first 24 hours after otorhinolaryngologic surgery and to identify factors influencing postoperative pain. ⋯ Analgesia and perioperative pain management in otorhinolaryngologic surgery seems to be highly variable. After otorhinolaryngologic surgery many patients seem to receive less analgesia than needed or ineffective analgesic drug regimes.

Epidural Steroid Injections, Conservative Treatment, or Combination Treatment for Cervical Radicular Pain: A Multicenter, Randomized, Comparative-effectiveness Study.
Cervical radicular pain is a major cause of disability. No studies have been published comparing different types of nonsurgical therapy. ⋯ For the primary outcome measure, no significant differences were found between treatments, although combination therapy provided better improvement than stand-alone treatment on some measures. Whereas these results suggest an interdisciplinary approach to neck pain may improve outcomes, confirmatory studies are needed.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyVital Signs After Cardiac Arrest Following Withdrawal of Life-Sustaining Therapy: A Multicenter Prospective Observational Study.
Controversies regarding the process and timing of the determination of death for controlled organ donation after circulatory death persist. This study assessed the feasibility of conducting a prospective, observational study of continuous monitoring of vital signs for 30 minutes after the clinical determination of death in five Canadian ICUs. Waveform data were analyzed. ⋯ This is the first observational study to prospectively collect waveform data for 30 minutes after the declaration of death. A future larger study may support initial data suggesting that circulatory function does not resume after more than 89 seconds of absence. Furthermore, persistence of cardiac electrical activity with the documented absence of circulation may not be relevant to declaration of death.

Multicenter Study Clinical TrialAnalysis of lung function and survival in RECAP: An open-label extension study of pirfenidone in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
RECAP is an open-label extension study evaluating pirfenidone in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) who completed the Phase 3 CAPACITY program. ⋯ FVC and survival outcomes in IPF patients newly treated with pirfenidone in RECAP were similar to those in the CAPACITY pirfenidone group. These data provide further evidence to support the use of pirfenidone in patients with IPF.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyA Safety and Efficacy Evaluation of Hemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carrier HBOC-201 in a Randomized, Multicenter Red Blood Cell-Controlled Trial in Noncardiac Surgery Patients.
Small study of data collected more than 15 years ago suggests hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier HBOC-201 may reduce transfusion requirements in a non-cardiac surgery cohort. Although no significant difference in adverse events or mortality, a trend to higher incidence of both among the HBOC-201 group requires a much larger trial to be conducted before any conclusion regarding safety of such a novel therapy can be made.
