Clinical evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine on mild active ulcerative colitis: A multi-center, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial.
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by a relapsing-remitting course owing to recurrent intestinal inflammation. UC often has symptoms such as intermittent rectal bleeding, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. As the precise etiology of UC has not completely clarified, UC has become a public health challenge worldwide. According to an epidemiological survey, there were about 350,000 new cases of IBD in China from 2005 to 2014. By 2025, the number of IBD patients in China will reach 1.5 million. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been widely used to treat UC in China, however, it is still challenging to systematically determine the efficacy of in UC. Therefore, this trial aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of CHM in the treatment of mild active UC patients. ⋯ The results of this trial will provide compelling evidence of the efficacy and safety of HEC for treatment of mild active UC and preliminarily show the potential mechanism of how HEC acts. Finally, it will widen treatment options for patients with mild active UC.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Long-term outcomes following intraosseous basivertebral nerve ablation for the treatment of chronic low back pain: 5-year treatment arm results from a prospective randomized double-blind sham-controlled multi-center study.
Damaged or degenerated vertebral endplates are a significant cause of vertebrogenic chronic low back pain (CLBP). Modic changes are one objective MRI biomarker for these patients. Prior data from the treatment arm of a sham-controlled, RCT showed maintenance of clinical improvements at 2 years following ablation of the basivertebral nerve (BVN). This study reports 5-year clinical outcomes. ⋯ CLBP patients treated with BVN ablation exhibit sustained clinical improvements in function and pain with high responder rates at a mean of 6.4 years following treatment. BVN ablation is a durable, minimally invasive treatment for vertebrogenic CLBP.

Test-retest and inter-examiner reliability of a novel bedside quantitative sensory testing battery in postherpetic neuralgia patients.
In health and disease, the somatosensory system has been interrogated with standardized research techniques, collectively referred to as quantitative sensory testing (QST). In neuropathic pain, QST has been used to characterize multiple sensory derangements. However, the use of QST outside the lab has been limited by several factors, including a lack of standardization, variability in procedural technique, and duration of testing that would be unacceptable for clinic. ⋯ These data demonstrate that the Neuropathic Pain Research Consortium beside QST protocol is reliable across examiner and over time, providing a validated QST tool for use in clinical practice and clinical trials. PERSPECTIVE: This blinded, multicenter trial in 32 patients with postherpetic neuralgia demonstrates bedside QST is reliable and suitable as a clinical trial outcome. The novel bedside battery could be used in clinical trials or in clinical practice over time given the reliability data presented in this article.

10 kHz High-Frequency Spinal Cord Stimulation for Chronic Thoracic Pain: A Multicenter Case Series and a Guide for Optimal Anatomic Lead Placement.
Surgical options for thoracic pain are limited and carry significant risk and morbidity. Spinal cord stimulation has the potential to be used for treatment of thoracic pain, as it has been useful for treating multiple types of chronic pain. Conventional tonic stimulation is limited in the treatment of thoracic pain, as it can produce paresthesia that is difficult to localize. Conversely, high-frequency spinal cord stimulation (HF-SCS) does not activate dorsal column A Beta fibers and does not produce paresthesia, and thus may be more beneficial in treating thoracic back pain not manageable with tonic stimulation. ⋯ Thoracic pain, back pain, spinal cord stimulation, high frequency, 10 kHz.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study Observational StudyWidespread Pain Is Associated with Increased Risk of No Clinical Improvement After TKA in Women.
When conservative treatments do not work, TKA may be the best option for patients with knee osteoarthritis, although a relatively large proportion of individuals do not have clinically important improvement after TKA. Evidence also suggests that women are less likely to benefit from TKA than men, but the reasons are unclear. Widespread pain disproportionately affects women and has been associated with worse outcomes after joint arthroplasty, yet it is unknown if the effect of widespread pain on TKA outcomes differs by patient gender. ⋯ Level III, therapeutic study.
