Parents play integral roles in their youth's chronic pain and can experience elevated distress related to caregiving. This study examined a cognitive-behavior therapy-based parent-targeted group intervention, including understudied/novel resilience/risk (eg, distress, parenting self-regulation), and compared the effect of in-person versus virtual delivery format. ⋯ This standalone parent-targeted group intervention had positive effects on parent outcomes delivered either in-person or virtually.

Current research indicates that spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has a positive short-term impact on outcomes, such as quality of life, pain, and productivity in patients with chronic neuropathic pain. However, there is a need for studies on larger population samples. This study used data from Swedish national registers to analyze change and predictors of sick leave and disability pension 2 years before and after SCS treatment. ⋯ Large work loss prior to index date was also demonstrated (average 214 days before 1 year), indicating a significant burden on the patient, employers, and the society at large. The number of disability days varied considerably depending on age, sex, socioeconomic variables, and comorbidities; however, the effect of SCS seemed to have little association with patient characteristics. This economic benefit needs to be considered, as well as the clinical outcome, when evaluating the full societal value of SCS.

Pain science education (PSE) is commonly integrated into treatments for childhood-onset chronic pain. A core component of PSE is learning about, and often reconceptualizing, the biology of chronic pain. Yet, few interventions have been developed specifically for young adults and little is known about how young adults conceptualize the biology of pain. This study used a qualitative methodology to examine how young adults with childhood-onset chronic pain understand the biology of pain, and the language they use in this meaning-making process, which may inform future interventions tailored to this age group. ⋯ This study provides new qualitative insights reflecting a variety of ways that young adults with childhood-onset chronic pain conceptualize pain. Some conceptualizations of pain align with modern pain science principles (altered function of nervous and endocrine systems) while others conflict (unhealed injury). Health professionals can use these findings to tailor their pain education interventions by leveraging concepts that 'stick' for youth, being aware of, and interrogating, common misconceptions, and offering language and metaphors familiar to youth.

Despite a preponderance of pain-related attentional bias research, little is known about how these biases arise and change over time. We tested whether the degree of attentional bias malleability , that is, ability to acquire and relinquish patterns of selective attention towards pain information, predicts daily pain interference. Individuals with chronic pain (N = 66) completed a novel attentional bias malleability procedure based on a modified dot-probe paradigm. ⋯ Greater attentional bias (F 1,391 = 3.97, P = 0.047), greater readiness to acquire an attentional bias (F 1,389 = 4.92, P = 0.027), and less readiness to lose an acquired attentional bias toward pain (F 1,354 = 5.18, P = 0.024) all predicted less pain interference. There was also an interaction between pain severity and overall attentional bias malleability (F 1,62 = 5.48, P = 0.023), such that as pain severity increased, those who showed greater attentional bias malleability showed less corresponding increase in their pain interference than those who showed less attentional bias malleability. This study adds new thinking to the dynamic nature of attentional bias and how such biases might arise and influence pain outcomes.
